If I remember correctly, is that one of those top sharpening things that go on the nose of the bar??

IF so, those arent bad for the ocassional user.

But If you cur several cord per year, it is well worth the time to learn to file your own chains. And a granberg file jig with a dozen files will only set you ~$40

Yes its a top blade chain. I usually cut 4 to 5 cords a year plus all the clean up around the farm so we will see how it holds up

I watched that sharpening tech on Ask This Old House yesterday. There was a pile of sparks that came out as they showed how to use it. For now I will stay with the classic chain. ( I can not stand using safety chain )
That is why I order 50' rolls and make up my own.

So much does this cost? And do you have to use their chain? A guy at work was tell me about this just this past Thursday, but he did not know the price.

The ones I seen were for 3/8 low profile chain only, has this changed?

You have to get the kit to start with which comes with the bar chain and sharpener. It starts at about$ 75. If you need a new chain after original purchase they run about$ 30 all about the same price as the standard bar and chains

Put a Powersharp 18" kit on my JD CS36 last weekend. Wow.. Nice chain and sharpener. The kit was $59.99 at Home Depot. I used a 10% off Lowes Coupon (get them at local post office in movers kit -- home depot will honor). I also noticed there is a $10 rebate. That brought it down to $48 after tax and rebate. Not bad for a bar, chain, and sharpener. The time saved is even better!!

I'm not a pro and just want to use my saw with minimal downtime for sharpening. This is perfect for me....

Sharpening a regular 20" chain in the field on the chainsaw takes literally 2 minutes, and it only takes about 5 minutes to learn how the first time. I can't see how this setup is any better than the traditional, even for occasional users. I guess many people think of sharpening chains as some sort of art that takes years to learn to do correctly, when that couldn't be farther from the truth.

And $30 for replacement chains that probably only have half the life of a regular chains at best? Boy, they really got you by the balls with that one...

Yeah its not that difficult to hand sharpen a chain, although for some they're better off with a device that give a more accurate angle,
for example: my son has my old chainsaw I showed him how to sharpen it, and he give effort to try:cool: although he brought it to me one time thought the bar had somehow got bent, he said the saw would cut in a curve not straight through, I took a closer look at the teeth and found that he was getting the right side teeth sharpened but the left teeth were not, He told me he couldn't get the file to go into the teeth on that side,he said it would bind with him:cool: ...
Hmmmm, so i guess he wasn't sharpening those teeth,:( no wonder it was cutting in a curve:confused2:
so for some folks they need this tool
