Thanks BHD... my wife actually took the test so we would be able to buy the Fumigate pellets but since the Coop stopped selling them, we were not sure where to get them. Do you have any suggestions as it looks like you are also from Colorado.
We also had some farmers tell us that because it takes moisture to set off the pellets, it really needed to be applied with a thin layer of snow cover which is hard to do with the property as far away from our primary residence that it is. I don't know if shooting a little water down the holes prior to covering would be the ticket for application at anytime?
I will admit we are a little nervous about the dangers to us applying these as you mentioned above but it might be the best choice.
check with other coops, or grain /chemical companies, pest control companies,
this chemical is used for fumigating wheat, in bins,
phostoxin releases a phosphine gas, it does not leave a residue like some poisons, I did it in very dry years, even the moisture in the air will release the gas, I had no problems with it working, but I do think one needs to keep up on the process, weekly, daily even. if elimination is the goal, some depends on if there are other colonies of Rats, near, if there are then elimination may not be possible, unless one goes after them,
Mine were dumped, on me and no other colonies, in the area, with in 10 miles, but mine were starting to spread,
and had to work on them as well some,
like I said I did this years ago, so check current laws and if permits are needed, or a survey for black footed ferrets, is needed, Not sure what the current laws are now, or the procedures.
