I'm planning on getting a pre-built 12'x20' garage/barn/shed type building to place on my property. It should run about $3500. The building will be used to store some tools and some tractor implements, maybe set-up some bunks for staying overnight, could possibly be used to house the tractor, etc. Basically a place to call base camp. Home is about 1:45 away from the property. A weekend cabin is in the plans, but is probably several years away from happening. Anyway, before I plunk any money down on the shed I was wondering if there were any other good alternatives that people might want to suggest. That could involve put-together building kits and such.

Thanks,
Darrell

Is that just materials delivered, or is the building assembled?

If the price includes putting it together, than 240 sqare feet for just under $15 a square foot is a VERY VERY good price.

What type of foundation? Siding? Roof? Door?

Are you sure about that price???

In my situation, I bought two sea containers. They are big metal square boxes that were 8 feet wide, 8 feet tall and 40 feet long. They are water proof, bug proof and if set up with protective covers for the locks, they are almost break in proof. Or as close as your going to find.

Two and a half years ago, I paid around $3,200 for two of them including delivery. Later I put a roof over them and built a barn using them as the side walls.

One thing to remember, is you can't have too much space. If you can go any bigger, I'd sure recomend it. 240 square feet isn't very much space, in fact it's less than most single car garages.

Good luck,
Eddie

oh my ... I bought the same size shed - gambrel roof - skid foundation - prebuilt, delivered and setup on concrete blocks - (6 years ago) for $2000 .... I guess I'll hang on to it and spend the $200 to move it rather than buy new if they've gone up that much.

That is assembled.

It will be set down on a bed of gravel. The floor is built on top of 4x4s. Siding is something like T-11. Roof is asphalt shingles. Door is typical garage type door on metal runners.

It might actually be a little less. I was just guessing from what I can remember.

The problem is with it being pre-assembled they can only get something into the property that is "so" big. The 12x20 may even be pushing it. That's why the interest in something I might put together, but I don't want to get into that if it's going to cost a lot more or take a huge amount of time to put together. I don't have a lot of extra money or time. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Another advantage to seavans is they are very difficult to break into. Not impossible, but it takes serious intent. Box trailers likewise. I stored by tractor for 4 years in a 40' box. 16 ' long ramp made from 3 telephone poles & hemlock planks. It's a refer box so it heats very quickly with a gun type heater & stays warm in 30 below zero weather. Have built a barn but keep trailer for off season storage of snowmobiles, boat, 4 wheelers. Like Eddie said -you can't have too much storage space - maybe too much stuff though !!

My dad bought a shed like that but I think his was around 12'X24' for about $4,500 delivered. He got his from PA and had it delivered to Preston County, WV. He had some add ons put on his though. One thing he added was a side walk through door but I can't remember the others. He has since wired his for electric and it has worked great. We haven't had any problems with people trying to break into it. It is a summer place similar to what you are talking about.

I'll go along with that just one stall in my metal pole building is 16 X 22 feet.
The four bays in my garage are 13x 30 feet each.

All together I have 12 stalls.
My 6x8 utility trailer is sitting outside because all 12 stalls are filled up.

Prices sure have gone up. For my 24x32 pole barn I paid 6,500.00 labor and materials. That works out to be $8.50sf. This was three years ago.

John,

I did a whole post on building it in this section awhile ago. Do a search for Container Barn and it will come up. Sort of a long thread, but if you skim through it you should be able fo find some decent pictures.
