Hello. Me and my family are in the process of buying about 10.5 acres in SC which will be a complete change for us. We currently live in the city on 0.07 acres. Neither my wife nor I have ever lived in the country, but we're excited. Currently we're trying to decide how best to approach the land clearing (not allowed to post links yet...it's in the buying/pricing/comparing forum) and whether we should buy a tractor now or wait. Things we think we'll be using the land for: a long awaited yard for the kids, wife wants 1 goat and 1 duck (not sure how lonely they get), probably need a fence to keep our dog from taking off (like the dog on funny farm), a vegetable garden, and after restoring our old house, i've gotten into wood working so a work shop, etc. We have A LOT to learn, but I learned quick how much ticks like us...very welcoming critters they are. Anyway, I've already learned a lot browsing through the forum here and look forward to being a part of the community. This has been a short intro from me.

Welcome to TBN. You will learn to love country living. Ticks - do a "whole body" check before going to bed in the evening. Check your clothing also. They aren't a major item - just have to remember to check.

Making a list of things you need to accomplish will help deciding what kind & size of equipment to look for. Congratulations.

Welcome to the forum and country life!

:welcome:

You can never have just one goat or duck. ;) It's a fact.

Welcome. Gonna need at least 2 goats and 2 ducks as both need company. (btw this is how it starts). Have fun. Good movie reference.

Thanks for the welcomes!

oosik - I feel even when we check our clothes, it's not until we're in the car heading home that we find the ticks (especially the seed ticks). My wife found the biggest yet after we'd already been home for 2 hours (back in the "city"), went back out for a run, and found it on her when she got back. They were in the car. And making the list isn't my problem...it's actually doing;) I can think of tons of things I'll use it for, but reality... One of my biggest hobbies is planning for things I'll never do.

Luke, I believe you're right. At the moment my daughter is obsessed with ducks...and babies (though she still is one). I think she'll be asking for a monkey soon, so I need to start introducing her to other options. Hopefully not a horse any time soon. The other part of our 180 and another funny farm reference is we currently live in a quassi-ghetto. It's changed a lot over the years but still too many drug deals going on outside. I often ponder if I should pay off all the dealers to dress nicely, and offer a bonus to any one who helps close the deal when we go to sell the house. So the country life is going to be a COMPLETE and welcomed change from where we are. Who knows, maybe we'll start a blog. I kind of wish I had for the house we're in now.

I know how it is with ticks. Many times I wake up at night and feel one crawling on me. However, 34+ years here and never had one "burrow in". The main thing is - no matter how you do it - at least you find them.

I'm great for lists also. I make fantastic list of thing I want to do and then realize that its either too much, too difficult, too costly or just a pipe dream. At least I have an idea of almost everything humanly possible that could be done here. Some day, some day.................

BTW, I have scientificly discovered that ducks make more poop per pound than any other animal that has ever lived.
(except politicians of course)
