Watched Preppers last night and one episode featured a guy who purchased a used Army 2 1/2 ton truck that was currently running on diesel. He claimed that it was designed for multi fuel use and could also run on used motor oil or regular gas. I am no gearhead but I can see the possible logic of motor oil in a diesel engine but wouldn't regular gas require a whole different fuel ignition system (i.e. spark plugs vs glow plugs/compression)? Help me out here, fact or fiction?

The military multi-fuel engines will run on different fuels and mixtures. Sometimes it might take a good mechanic to get it to run on some mixtures, but if it burns it can run on it. I remember one time in the service we had a 2 1/2 ton run out of fuel, we actually poured whiskey and the little bit of diesel and gas we had from other vehicles in and made it to the next fuel point. It spit and sputtered a couple times, but it ran. We wasted several bottles of good whiskey that day, but we were able to get to our destination where there was more alcohol...

Many of the engines they have including outboards are specked to run on multi fuels, which is either gas some kerosine type stuff i think like jet, and low grade gas. This was probly designed to run on jet fuel and deisel and kero typ fuel.

A deisel will run on gas for a bit till it melts down or gernades from pre ignition, remember a deisel is just compression ignition from heat, gas flares up at a lower temp so it will ignite in a deisel as well.

Point to remember that while a multi-fuel engine will burn a moderately wide variety of fuels; as others have noted previously, some burn better than others.

Your horsepower will vary radically, and your fuel efficiency will also.

On the other hand, they run pretty well on ordinary used cooking oil as long as you filter the batter particles out first.
