I'm looking for a 5 1/2 ft disc harrow with easy adjustment (for the gang angle) and have come across a used Frontier DH1066, 5-1/2 foot model in stock at a JD dealer for $700. Have not seen it yet cause it's in NC, and I'm in SC. The deal is that it's at a "sister" JD dealership in NC, but the dealer here can get it shipped down for no extra cost if I can be patient and wait till the next time they run a truck between the two stores. He's trying to get me some pic's by email asap.
I asked him how old it is, he doesn't have any idea cause you can't tell by the serial numbers, at least that's what he said. If it looks good in the pic's, do you think I should get him to hold it for me and have it sent down?? I can find used 5ft'ers for less than $700 pretty easily around here, but most have the hard to adjust gangs with bolts that have to be undone on them. Plus, they are usually painted anything but green. That Frontier green would look great behind my 790! The local dealer said that new those harrows run in the $1400 dollar range, so does that sound like a reasonable price to you??

If that disc is in good shape I think it's a pretty good deal. I looked at a new one like that and the dealer wanted to move it pretty bad.....but I think the price was still about $1250. () If memory serves me right. I think these are pretty good discs....but check the disc weight per blade....as posted by others the weight should be in the area of 45 lbs per blade or more for best performance. Also, for our neck of the woods....the notched blades (especially in front) are much preferred.

I think I passed on the disc being offered me because it was a 6 1/2 footer....and I wanted / needed a 5 1/2 footer. 4 less blades for me to pull.
After some more research.....I honed in on the King Kutter and bought it new for $800.

Hope this helps.....good luck Kebo.

OH....and as I tell my wife upon finding a good deal...."Nobody's gonna give you one."

I find it's funny.....that oftentimes when you ask an opinion on a major item like a disc.......there are few if any responses. But ask a question about adding a bucket hook.....and you'll get ten pages of replies. Go figure. lol;)

Did you buy the disc Kebo?

haha yeah I agree. just noticed this thread. this must be an all SC thread.:D that Frontier disk you're looking at is made by Tuffline(or so I was told by my dealer). that seems like a very good price to me, i'd jump on it if it looks good when you get the pics. I bought a 6'10" Leinbach with 20" blades recently and so far I like it. not the heaviest disk I've ever owned(780 lbs) but with the gangs set all the way aggressive it sure does dig deep! a comparable Tuffline disk would have ran me $2,000 and i paid $1,100 for mine. if i tear this one up and it turns out to be junk I will come off the 2K but for now it's worked fine. easiest disk I've ever seen to adjust too. suprised other manufacturers don't adopt this setup(must be patented?)

I kinda wondered what you meant when you said all SC guys on this thread..........and then I looked at my signature. It sez: Between NC and SC MINNESOTA. (as in....north central and south central Minnesota)

I live in south central MN and my land and tractor is in north central MN....about 225 miles away. I can see where this could be confusing....so I will make a change on it. Maybe then I will get a little respect when I talk about it being cold up here....lol. ;):D

I had wondered what the "SC" and "NC" in your .sig meant as well. I knew that you lived in one place, and that your land/tractor was somewhere else. Thought maybe it was either in South Carolina or North Carolina!! LOL.

I think the reason most companies that make harrows with that crude bolt arrangement do it so they can sell them cheaper. I doubt it's a patented thing. It might have been a patent at one time, but patents are only good for twenty years.

I want a harrow that's easy to adjust the angle on, even if I have to spend more money for it. I've found that if you have one that's hard to adjust the angle, you will most likely set it one way and leave it that way from now on. I have seen at least one design that hand a crank handle at the front and one at the rear of the harrow. Turn the handle and it turned a threaded rod that would adjust the gang angle. That one looked REAL easy to adjust, well, at least as long as you kept the threaded rods greased up!

Got three pic's on the harrow today. It looks really good! See below. The dealer said that he would have to charge me sales tax on it, total would be $749. Although, I wouldn't feel right if I didn't try and haggle him down a few dollars!! ;) The paint looks really good, and the corners on the scalloped harrows look to be pretty sharp indicating little use. Plus, the adjustment on this one looks like it would be REAL easy to change the angle of the gangs. I have to make sure that my trailer is wide enough for it first, before I really commit to it.

So, for $749 max, (and if it fits my trailer) deal or no deal???

This pic from the front shows it has the bushings for IMatch on it, which I don't need:
