i been looking a lot at ads and websites for a 3720 and i'm seeing 4520s and 4720s cheaper. is the 3000 tractors more desirable? has anyone had one from both series? i'm trying to get some feedback on them

Much depends upon what options are configured on the different machines. Mid pto, optional SVC's, extra lights, HD bucket, cruise, eHydro vs PowerReverser tranny, etc., etc.

Important to (as much as possible) compare apples to apples. So, the stated cost of the different machines needs to be closely looked at for those differences.

However, the 4000 series machines are considerably larger and have features that make them a more heavy duty work platform. Planetary rear-end gears vs spur gear rear differential on the 3000 series. 2,500 psi hydraulics vs 2,200 psi with the 3720 and 12 gpm vs 8.6 gpm hydraulic flow rates. ETC, ETC.

That aside -- the basic questions that should be addressed are -- what kinds of work do you have in mind for the machine? How large is your place? How much money is in the budget?

You'll get quite a bit of experience and information from fellow TBNer's if they have some ideas about what it is you'd like to do with your tractor...

Best of luck.

Like AKfish says, depends on what you need the machine for. For example if you do commercial snow removal you will likely not do it with a 3000 series but on the other hand, if you're into residential estate maintenance a smaller 3000 series will likely prove more practical for many reasons.

I made a small mint back in my High School days with my dad's L2900 which is pretty much the same size as the 3x20 series.... Precisely because it wasnt "too big"....nobody wanted damage to their lawn caused by "bigger equipment" and actually kept me VERY busy with the backhoe and didnt mind paying for it.

All thing being equal, like Karl2 said, unless your doing major commercial stuff (even then all the commercial lawn & yard maintenance guys down here are rollin 2520's) a 3x20 might fit the bill.

I think JD's margin must be pretty good on the 3x20 tractors. In some ways the 4x20s are an in between tractor. Too big for some jobs and way too small for others.

I dont see it as a larger margin on the 3x20...I just see it as the 3x20's hold their value much better then a 4x20 for the exact reason you mentioned....Alot more people are in the market for the 3x series then the 4x...
Brand new, the 3x & 4x are what I would call "fairly" priced

I can't speak to the "dealer margins" on one tractor series vs another. Not in that business..

Pretty clear however, that there are many more landowners/homeowners with 5-10 acres than homeowners with 20-30 acres.

Therefore, it's not difficult to recognize where the greater "market share" exists for dealerships with the 3000 vs 4000 series CUT's (not withstanding the regional i.e.; Texas vs Conneticut differences). So, I'd have to agree that the 3x series is more likely to hold value given the market demographics.

But perfect for commercial snow removal where a narrow yet relatively high and heavy 4x4 cabbed machine with more power than many larger frame tractors (well, the 4720 does) is a godsend :)

Speaking of narrow, I really like the 4x20's stance versus the 3x20's stance. i think the 3x20's is a bit narrow, as it seems like it is 2" slimmet and also taller than the 4310.
