BCS 853 w/ loaded tires
Hello all.

I'm being offered a one owner 1965 gas 150 fixed wide front which has been reputed to be well maintained by it's now deceased owner for $6,000. My research would indicate this price might be a bit high. The tractor started when the key was turned and has good oil pressure and is complete. The outward condition is what you would expect of a used tractor of this vintage, but nothing seems broken. The owner was a WWII vet and this was his "baby" according to his wife.

In addition to the tractor there are seven implements that go with it, brush hog, blade, assorted tillers, pretty much the whole suite for a farm tractor. I have pictures I could put up if that helps. I have 80 acres I will be clearing over the next five years in preparation for my early retirement in Upstate NY and a tractor will be needed. Just not sure this is the one.

Is it the opinion of this forum that the implements add enough value to justify the price assuming the condition is as good as reputed? The farm it is on is being sold and will probably become single family homes, so she must sell the tractor. She got the 6k value from a auction guy who supposedly said it's real value was 12k, but 6k was what she could get.

Note that I am traveling today, so will not get a chance to respond until tomorrow.

Thanks in advance!

Here I've added a few pictures of the tractor and my place. I've gotten some great feedback offline that 6k probably isn't an unfair price considering the implements and the condition.

A few more details:

The front tires are new and the rear in very good condition, so it hasn't seen much blacktop.
Haven't tested the PTO with load, will do that. It should be in good condition unless something has happened since the owner died.\It comes with all the original manuals.
My plan is to store the tractor in a 40 foot shipping container (properly vented) until I can get a proper structure up.

I think she will clean up real nice and be a more than useful. If I had my druthers I would get a diesel, but the gas should work as well.

An old gasser like that would fetch $3000 at best up here...and then there are the implements, the brush hog is the real prize among those but definitely not worth the extra 3 grands.

Does it have multipower are the rims in good shape I have found that the Z145 engine to be thirsty when you run it under 3/4-full load I have had the carb ice up when running it hard in the cold weather.
BTW check the bottom of the bell housing for a cotter pin sticking out and spin it around to see if oil comes out.

Thanks for the response kenstrac.

I read about the cotter pins on another an old archive (Big Dean's, I think I found it lurking here). I did not see any oil under the tractor, so I don't think it is leaking, but will check the cotter pins.

As far as the multi power, I thought all of these models had it, but will check. If you have any details on that, (specifically what to check for) it would be appreciated.

As far as the carb icing up, I guess that's why there is an advantage to the diesel models.

Here is what Big Dean's site says which I post here:

Thing to check when buying a MF tractor
On the bell housing there is a weep hole on the bottom it should have a cotter pin head sticking down twist it around Check there for leaks. It Is all right if it is a little damp around it but should not have a steady drip of oil. If the pin head is not there stick something up in the hole and move it around to make sure it is not plug people will plug that hole to hide transmission leaks. It can get very expensive to repair those leaks. After it gets warmed up let it idle a couple of minutes then run it up about 1500 rpm there should not be any blue smoke come out the exhaust. Put something on the three point the heavier the better, raise up and shut off the engine it probably will seep down. That is normal but it shouldn't fall steady. Try to have the hydraulic oil hot when you do this test. On the MF50 & MF65 also the 150 through 180. Behind the grill is the power steering cylinder if it hasn't been cleaned up it will have oil and dirt there. Look for any clean spots they are cause by leaks there should not be any oil that you can see there. Shake the rear wheels side ways to see if the axle are tight and check there for any signs of a leak right behind the wheels. With live power the clutch should stop the tractor half way down with the PTO still turning. Then the PTO should stop when you push the clutch all the way down. With the independent Pto it is best to get the transmission oil close to operating temperature. With something hooked to the PTO engage the PTO. It should start to turn immediately. If it hesitates that is a good sign the clutches or the seals are bad. I hope this helps you find any problems before you by the tractor. Pull the hydraulic dipstick if the oil is white or light gray this means the oil has water in it. Check the normal things like any coolant leaks or any major oil leaks & be sure to check the oil & coolant levels. if the brake have a good pedal but still not stop the tractor except to spend any where from $200 to $600 to get brakes If you are going to do the work. You can probably add another $400 to 600 if you have it done at a shop. This is how I would check one if I were buying it.

Oh, and in so far as the rims, I'll take another look, but don't remember any rust (it has always been kept in the shed and is one owner). Rust and or damage are the two problems to look for, correct?

3k or there abouts is about the middle range (2-4k) what I am seing this tractor being sold for elsewhere based on Google searches. I suppose prices can vary locally based on supply and demand. Still haven't decided what to offer for it if I decide to go with this MF.

thanks for the input!

The problem is these tractors are popular and therefore there always seems to be a premium attached to buying one. The abence of a loader drops the value somewhat -- 3000 to 4000 sounds about right for the tractor. Implements might get 2 but seems high -- JMHO.

Yes you can but I don't recommend it unless you put a loader on it OR a lot of weight on front you will also need a pump the tractor hydraulics do not have enough gpm to run it.
