I'm thinking of attending an auction that has a 1979 L245DT, No power steering, shows 1250 hrs but tach doesn't work, in pretty good shape, 4x4. What would be a fair price to pay for this? Anyone have anything good or bad to say about these machines? Thanks
Buying an older tractor at auction is tricky. Very often the bidding goes wild because several people are only there for the tractor. Unless you have an opportunity to really check it out (inspect drained oil, etc.) it's hard to know enough to justify much of a bid. In the casual-sale front lawn market, the L245DT might sell in the $3k to $5k range depending completely on condition. Add maybe $1000 for an original Kubota loader if it looks good.
My general rule at auctions is "good deal or no deal" - too many unknowns and no recourse.
