Price / Lb for steel?

I collect used machinery cheap from internet auctions and place them in the equipment graveyard behind the bush untill i have time to work on the project i bought it for... but usually parts and steel tubes are borrowed off it for everyday jobs before i find time to use it for the project i bought it for...
since i have a band saw i throw very little steel away, i saw small endcaps for tubing from cold rolled C profile leftovers.

I have a small scrap bin close to the saw, it is filled with everything shorter than a 2 feet. When i haul scrap to the trader about 15 km away from here,(which pays 14 eurocents per kilo at the moment) i turn the scrapbin upside down in the trailer, then put all the parts worth keeping, back into the same scrapbin.
Main advantage for me is that i can get an overview of what i have available before i get to throw things away, and i'll allways have some small pieces of different size of steel available without having to saw up good lengths.

M. Maselli & Sons, Inc. - Web Site

Google Map 519 Lakeville St, 1/2 mile west of 101.
I stopped by there today. Wow! Several acres crammed with neat racks of salvage steel of every description. How about the big multi-sheave blocks (pulleys) you see on the largest cranes? Dozens of them @ $150. 850 gallon S.S. nitrogen expansion tank, rated 20 psi, $2,100. Acres of I-beams and large pipe of course. $150 for a 16 inch gate valve, there were about 30. How about an 8BA cylinder head? (Late flathead Ford). There were 20 in a bin. An acre or so of S.S. food processing equipment, huge blowers, conveyor components. Belting for your thresher.

$0.45 / lb for plate, channel, etc in random short lengths.

Plus the most comprehensive real hardware store up front that I've ever seen in Northern California.

I'll definitely be back.

Thanks, napabavarian!

... don't forget ...the small yard behind
Did you stop at the Do Not Enter gate? They told me it was ok to wander through the two larger yards behind that one. :D :D

In back, I saw trailer hitches and step bumpers off everything from a Taurus to something that was 8 ft wide. 150:1 reduction gears, 50hp. Electric motors up to 1 ton size. Some apparent winery plumbing, all stainless steel. A two-bottom plow. Wire rope. Railway Express steel-wheeled wagons. And there's more! And most surprising - everything was sorted and accessible.

Or did you mean the stuff on the right of the driveway? Salvaged windows, shop equipment, welder's carts for two huge bottles, mail sorting racks, aircraft-boarding stairs ...

Thanks again for the tip!
