Do different NH dealers charge different prices for parts? Are the prices for parts a standard price from dealership to dealership or do dealers charge what they want to? Do we need to price shop when looking for parts? Any and all comments welcomed.

The dealership I deal with seems to get the prices off of a computer, looked to be a NH site, or a NH CD. Parts may even be priced location specific too. For whole goods they had a 4" thick book they got the prices out of. Of course I probably paid the list price /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif and if you did more volume the price may go down.

I get a pink copy of the invoice from my dealer. It lists MSRP and the sale price. Some things are discounted. For example, almost every time I buy a part for my tractor, it's discounted at least 10%. I recently bought a 72" toothbar that was priced at $350 MSRP and my dealer only charged $299. Both prices showed up on my invoice. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I would shop some and compare. I work for a car dealership parts department and we do not sell for the same price as a competing same brand franchise 20 miles away. I would suspect tractor dealers have similar leeway in establishing prices.

I called the dealer that I bought my tractor from and asked what the cost for the parts to do my 50 hour service, and was quoted a price of about $80. I called a second NH dealer and asked them what would the price of an engine, hydraulic and hydrostatic filter would be.The parts guy asked if I wanted a fuel filter also. He asked if I was doing a 50 hour service on my tractor. The price from the second dealer was $68 all together.Maybe the first dealer assumed I neened more parts. Is there anything that I am missing? This is what leads me back to my original post. Do different dealers charge different prices.

I'm going to get slightly off topic...

I used to know someone who used to be manager at one of the locations of an auto parts store chain which will remain nameless in this post. It's one of the old-style stores where nothing is on shelves up front, almost everything is back behind the counter and not priced.

He said they had set minimum prices for everything they sold, but since they worked off of commission, they were encouraged to increase the parts prices on a factor according to how gullible the customer looked.

He said the greed of the headquarters got to the point he had to quit.
I wonder if that goes on anymore anywhere?

With computors that the dealerships have, anything is posssible, MSRP can be anything that they want it to be, the same with sale prices. Minimum prices may be set, margins on any item can be adjusted to whatever the market will bear. Items priced in a certain range can be marked up a certain percentage and another range can be marked up with a different percentage. As far as I can tell, my New Holland dealer charges suggested retail. My JD dealer is a different story, they mark things up higher than suggested retail. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Alan, if you did not specify the exact parts you wanted at both dealers, you just can't be sure about pricing. Another issue is that the first dealer might have included changing the air cleaner in his price even though it is suggested to not change that the first time until 100 hours. Maybe they also included a tube of grease. It doesn't take much to add up to $12. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

On the fuel filter, did you specify all the seals or just the filter? How about fluids? If you change HST and Hydraulic filters, you will need to add a couple of quarts of 134 hydraulic fluid.

I just think there are too many variables unless you are certain you specify exact parts at both dealers and can compare the prices part-for-part.

Jim did I miss something here? My manual advises check/clean air filter at 100 hours but recommends replacing only seasonally.

My dealer gives all new NH purchasers all the materials and labor for the 50 hour service FREE. The only thing is they will not transport it for free, or come out for free, but if you bring it to them, everything is on them. If you want to do it, you just pick up your "goody bag" and away you go. A nice way to welcome a new buyer. Shopping for dealers is important.
