( My manual advises check/clean air filter at 100 hours but recommends replacing only seasonally. )

I think you got me, Mike! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I scanned my chart and missed that it said clean instead of replace. Actually, with as few hours as some folks put on their tractors in a year, "seasonally" might just turn out to be less than 50 hours. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

My point, of course, was to make sure you are comparing exactly the same items. In Alan's first post he said he asked one dealer about the cost of the 50 hr materials and the other dealer he specified what he wanted. I'm just giving the dealers the benefit of the doubt. Actually I was surprised that either of Alan's dealers wasn't over $100. Isn't our hydraulic filter on our Class IIIs over $50 just by itself? ...the memory is the first to go. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Yesterday bought for my TC40D:
Engine oil filter $7.47
HST filter $54.74 (big one by back wheel)
Outer air filter $34.49
134 Fluid 5 gal pail $34.99

The were out of the smaller hydraulic filters, so I didnt get the price.

Actually, the big filter is the main hydraulic filter. The little one in front of your left foot and brake pedals on the TC40D is the HST filter. It's the one I destroyed a few weeks ago on a small stump. I think the HST filters are in short supply because my dealer didn't have any when I first checked and then he only had two when I bought one 1-1/2 weeks ago. Now let me see... I think it was around $9, but I'm not sure because it was on an invoice with almost $1000 worth of goodies.

What bothers me almost as much as their price is that the grey filters don't have any part number on them. Have you noticed that? The engine oil filter is the only one with a part number. That just seems so "wrong" to not be able to look at your old filter to get the correct part number. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

AARGH! I had to correct this memory error. I checked my invoice and the HST filter was $20.09. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif On another invoice from 2001, that same filter is $17.78 and in 2002 it was $17.64.

I also checked my prices on three Hydraulic filters over that time. In 2001 it was $55.66, 2002- $56.77, 2004 - $53.54. It seems that two weeks ago, my price was less than Markie paid yesterday. I can't think of why prices would change so much, but maybe it's how many of an item the dealer orders and the cost of freight. At any rate, I think these prices are way, way too expensive. I don't think it's a case of dealers gouging their customers, but rather, it's New Holland. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I can sure see why Alan is questioning the differences in prices. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

jinman, I don't do the kind of farm business that you do. I am trying to maintain 6 acres and not go broke in the process. I know larger tractors mean more cost in tractor maintenance. You need to save every dollar that you can.

I see that there is another post in the NH forum dealing with purchasing parts on line. I believe that people are looking to save a dollar or two. There is no real proof that OEM parts are more superior than quality after market parts if you can find them. The tractor manufacturer are the people that make out the best on parts. The dealer is the man in the middle. The dealer probably only makes a few penny's per part and gets to hear all of the complaints from customers about how high the cost of parts are. The customer is stuck with the high cost of parts because there is no other place to buy parts, but at the dealer, which the tractor manufacturer controls the cost of the parts.
