What do you think of JD 955 (about 1990) w/ fel, sb, bh and mower, new engine (not sure why, will find out) meter reading of 997 hours for $15300.00? According to machinery link the tractor alone would go for over $9000.00. I still have a lot of questions for the dealer and need to look at the equipment.

What experiences have you had w/ this model? The dealer says it is a good reliable tractor (what else would he say?).

Thanks ahead of time for the info.

Tabby,

My neighbor has a 955 and he likes it a lot. Before I got my tactor I even used it some. I believe it is about a 33 horsepower. I also believe it was a more durable tractor than the 4000 series. Designed for heavier usage?? Could be wrong, that is just what the neighbor says. The price seems a bit high based on what I have seen out there. You are getting some good accessories. My dad just looked at a Ford 1720 that is 29 horsepower that had a loader on it with 900 hours and they wanted 10,500.00 for it but would take $9,500.00. He went back to get it and now it is gone.

I would find out more about that motor and if your comfortable with his answer do some negotiating with him.

tabby,

I have an 855 which is the 955's little brother and I can tell you that it has been extrememly reliable so far. I've only had mine for about a year now and have put about 80 hours on it myself. (total of about 400). It runs like a top. I paid 12,000 for mine with 275 hours, brush hog, loader, maschio tiller, and some other home made implements. Mine had very low hours and was/is very well kept. I'd love to have the backhoe. So you get a little more HP, and a backhoe which is quite expensive. I'm not sure what part of the country you live in but everything costs more out here. I think you might be able to get it for a little less. I bought mine from a private seller so he didn't have to include any costs for business when selling it.

How good of shape is the tractor in aside from the new engine? Any rust? How are the turf tires looking? Take a careful look at the unit and see if there are going to be more hidden costs soon. Is this the dealer you will be working with from here on out?

Good luck - I think you'll find the tractor itself to be great and have plenty of muscle.
