I would like some opinions on the following before I go take a look at it in person:

John Deere 790 (4WD) with 98 hrs.
FEL with bucket and forks
John Deere 7 backhoe attachment
6' finish mower
16' tandem axle trailer

Seller says it is in very good condition and is asking $18,000 for the package. I haven't seen it in person yet, but from the pictures, it looks like it has barely been used. Any common problems to look for?

Thanks,
sf

those seem to be pretty bullet proof tractors from all i've read and heard about them. price doesn't sound too bad. i'd be curious to know the make of the finish mower and trailer though. i would ask him if he has done the 50 hour service and if he has any documentation of it. i'm not 100% positive but i think the 790 calls for service every 50 hours? if that's true then its coming up on its second service and i would ask him if hes done that also or if thats something you're going to have to perform if you decide to buy the tractor.

Trailer looks like it is an "Intruder" brand. Appears to be a standard 16' tandem axle with ramp storage underneath. Probably just 3500lbs axles. I really don't need the trailer as I already have one better than this one.

Mower looks like it is a John Deere, but could be another make painted green. Ironically I just bought a Bushog 72 RDTH two weeks ago.

If I buy it, I figure I'll resell which ever mower and trailer I don't need.

You know if you don't need the trailer or mower I would try to buy the tractor loader and backhoe separately. While the seller may wan't to keep it as a group why should you have to buy it knowing you need to sell off the extras. I would be a little insistent and see what the fella does.

Sawdust Farmer,
I'm a newbie, actually this is my first post. I can't speak to prices in your area, but that seems like a great deal. I got my 790 a few months ago, FEL no backhoe or trailer for $12K. I felt like that was a fair price with low hours. If the 790 fits your needs go for it!

Hi SF ,

You did'nt mention the year , so I would ask is it the 30hp. or the 27hp. ???

My BIL has a 1999 JD790 and it's the 30hp. , great Tractor , he has had no
problems to date ...

I don't know what year JD made the change maybe someone else will know ,
good luck ...

I think thats a good deal. I payed $15,400.00 for mine new. no trailer, no backhoe, no cutter, no forks. The tractor has been very dependable, plenty of hp for the tasks intended for it requiring a smaller frame tractor. I would give the package deal serious thought. There are some smoke'n deals right now if your look'n very much. Thats one of them:D

It is a 2004 with 419 loader. The finish mower is also a John Deere brand. When did the horsepower change?

The JD 2006 buying guide lists the 790 as 27 gross hp, and the 2008 buying guide lists the 3005 (replaces the 790) as 27 gross hp, so I'm not sure it did change.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. I have a 2008, 27 HP and it has a lot more HP than traction even with filled tires.
