Price on Wood Splitter

I have a 20 year old home-built towable wood splitter with a 5hp B&S engine that I am going to sell, and I don't really know how much to ask for it. I see new ones in the Northern catalog for around $1000, so I'll definitely have to go way under that. It still works great, but I am not burning 20 face cords of wood every winter now, and my son-in-law has one I can borrow if I need one. The only problem is that the I-beam on it has developed a twist through the years, although it hasn't affected its operation at all.

Would $400 be about right? Too little? Too much?

I would start at 500 you can always come don't but rarely can you ever go up.

$400 sounds like a good figure. Could go a bit up or down from there, IMO.
My splitter is an 8hp B&S, purchased new in '85. Never presented a major problem other than occasional fix on an ignition module that the mice chewed through the wire, and the starter rope broke. Also one hyd hose. I wouldn't sell it for less than what you are asking, and maybe a bit more.
It has a 5x6 box beam that the pusher rides on (complete wrap around) and is tougher than some. Has split on average 8-10 cords a year. Initially there were 5 owners. This arrangement has worked pretty well (had my doubts in the beginning) and the partners are now down to 3, with me the only one burning wood full time. They got their $250 worth of splitter, so when they don't want to contribute to maintenance (about $20 a year average) then we disolve their partnership. If they want back in, they pay in what the rest contributed in the interim. Sorry to wander off on a tangent here. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
