Price vs. Horsepower

OK, this process is rolling along now.

I am kind of down to this:

The YM1610D and the YM1720D, both seem to be fairly popular models. Both are 3cyl with powershift. The 1610 has 20hp and weighs 1609#. The 1720 has 21hp and weighs 2072#.

The 1720D is $500 more than the 1610D.

I am planning to use this machine mostly for road maintenance with a box and scrape. We live in the woods so I have no plans to ever use a bushog. I may want to add a loader someday.

Do you think the 1 extra horsepower and the 400 extra pounds of the 1720 are worth the extra $500, or should I be fine with the 1610D?

Being bias because I own a 1720D, I think it is worth the extra $500 for box blading, not for the 1 extra hour power but for the extra 400 plus pounds of weight. The extra weight will give you that much more pull. The 1720 is also a little newer model. Hope this helps.

I would go for the weight. As I have a YM 1700, and my road off of the highway is up a pretty good grade. And if I take much of a bite with my scraper blade the tires spin real easy. Of course it only weighs about 1600 lbs. I wish I had more weight, as some of it I have to blade down hill, when I really want to pull it up hill, from where it has washed down. I don't think 4 wheel drive would help much, I just need more weight.

The 1720 also has wet disk brakes and a spin on hydraulic filter in addition to the screen in the trans. Both are good tractors, but the 1720 is worth an extra $500. Dave
