Ford 3930
My neighbor is offering me a 1997 Ford 3930 with 250 hours on it for around 14K. The machine seems well maintained. It has Ford's FEL with a hay fork. The engine has a turbo on it. (Why would I need that?)

The price seems about right but I wanted to see if there were any known major service problems.

Could I get a 4WD model in that price range?

I will do mostly mowing, hay hauling, plowing and general digging.

Thanks

That's probably ballpark for that tractor. A 4WD without loader would be about the same price in my area. NH turbocharged the engine in the 3930 from 1996 through the end of the series run in 2000.

I think the one of the reasons they turbocharged it was to make it quieter . I have a 1990 4630 , one engine size larger , no turbo , same frame size etc as the 3930 . Very good tractors in my opinon , no electronics to go bad etc.. At 250 hrs it should look like new , and if well cared for will last for many years , if you don't need the 4x4 it sounds good to me , hard to find these tractors with low hrs

If it has the 8x8 transmission and two pump hydraulic system, it probably is a fair price. The 8x2 transmission and single pump hydraulics would decrease the value significantly. 3930's were turbocharged from 1/98 through the end of production in 7/99. The turbocharger was added as part of the required exhaust emission standards package for the US.

The reason engines are turbocharged is because it keeps the manufacturer from having to develop a bigger engine to make the same power. They can save money by taking an existing N/A chunk, throw a turbo on it and they can compete in the next larger class of tractor, or just keep up with the competition.

That's often true, but not in this case. Ford/NH built the 3930 with the 201 cube NA engine for about 7 years before EPA regs forced it out of production. There were no cost savings or manufacturing efficiencies gained by implementing a new displacement, fuel system and turbocharger on a single tractor model for an 18 month production run.

I owned a 95 model without FEL before purchasing my new Kubota. I agree with RickB about the 8x8 trans with shuttle shift and the larger hydraulic pump system. Both are options that would be better for loader work. My dealer gave me $10,000 for mine 5 years ago (off discounted price). It had 675 hours. Two nuisances where 1) loud engine, and 2) range shifter was sometimes difficult to shift. Otherwise it was a great tractor. Price with very low hours and FEL sounds good to me.

hello i own a 3930 4x4 great tractor i use it all the time on the farm to bale hay with i have had no problems with it knock on wood since i bought it new 8 years ago i like the wide platfrom wheel base and low to the ground fell on the hillsides i think a tractor with that low of hours and with 4x4 and fel would be a steal at that price
