18% off list (total using the online configurator) would be good.

I got 16% on a cab model with loader and rear blade. But... the closer you are to Georgia - the "greener" things look!

I am going to briefly hijack this.
AKFish,
You sq. bale with a 10 bale grapple and the 5075. I have a NHTN75DA and have been doing the same thing. The TN comes in around 8500 pounds with the loader and loaded tires.

I have just moved from Tennessee to Maine and downsized to 34 acres from 100. The place I bought is dead level but very soft ground with a fairly high water table.

My original intention was to sell the NH with the farm in TN and get a 5075m but with this smaller farm and soft ground I don't think I need as long a wheelbase and definitely don't need the weight compacting the soil.

I am down to consideration of the 4520 and wondering what you think about using a grapple on the shorter wheelbase.

SEL and Cab are requirements BTW ;-)

Charley,

Weight alone would make me avoid the M! With cab and loader - I think the 5075M is gonna easily crowd 10,000 lbs - without wheel wts. or filled tires.

That said, in order to get the 4520 ballasted and configured such that with a grapple full of bales it doesn't "buck and jump" down the field - it's gonna be pretty heavy, too!

One thing I'd consider is going with an 8-bale grapple and accumulator. Little shorter and probably ~150-175lbs. lighter load on the front of the tractor.

The 4520 has enough power for a 5-6 disc mower (depending on hay conditions) and a small square baler with accumulator - but not a MoCo. That factor alone - mower conditioner - made me go bigger. Weather windows are so short and variable up here - I really need that extra time cushion the conditioner gives you.

Any thought's on another brand - NH or Kubota - or maybe the 5083e? Might shave off 500-700lbs right there!

The 5083 weighs about the same. I could empty the tires on the new Holland be in the same weight range. The new holland is a little better tractor than the 5083 but it's the wrong color ;-)

I've had the 8 bale accumulator and grapple for several years now and it makes one person haying much easier. I use a pair of sickle mowers and a haybine. I don't mind keeping them tuned and sharp so I have never worried about spending the money on disc machines.

NH has nothing in the smaller class. They still sell the equivalent of what I have and the New Powerstar is like the 5075m. Their compacts don't compete well with the Deere.

Kubota comes very close with the Grand L series. It has a 75" wheelbase which would make the ride better but there there is no self leveling loader option. The Deere has better ergonomics too. The Kubota M series is a lot lighter than Deere. They use a hydraulic valve to simulate self leveling. I have used one for haying before and they only have an 8x8 shuttle and I can never find the right speed to feed the new Holland baler. Too fast or too slow. It's frustrating.

Massey's 1660 is a good in between size too but no MSL either.

Ballasted the 4720 will weigh about 6000 pounds which is a lot better than 10,000. I re-calculated my New Holland's weight and it's over 9,000 with fluid in the tires.

HST would be the cat's Meow for mowing.....but then again, so would the 5075m with a 32/16 power plus ;-)

I've thought a lot about this in the last 24 hours. This latest life zig is changing my long term plans. Commercial hay is not really a consideration now with where I live and the farm I have ended up with. It was a significant part of my income plan before. I am no longer looking at 8,000+ bales a year where tractor choice becomes more critical. I am now looking at under 2K per year with the emphasis on more value added higher dollar products to support my retirement.

I'm ok with my new life but transitioning from my current off farm job is not really an option now until I reach a more typical retirement age. I love haying but now it will be more to support my own livestock and enjoyment. At this low volume I thing the 4x20 series is likely to work well and still be useful in the orchard with the added benefit of lower soil compaction.

I have gone from 30-40 acres of hay field to 12-15 which takes a different approach.

A 4x20 would work just fine with your current hay equipment and the acreage. With the lower bale numbers you won't really need to go any bigger.

And, it'll be less money and overhead for when you do get to a point with full retirement.
