Hello,

New here and new to tractors as well. Hopefully you can help me out with pricing and the size of tractors. I don't want to walk into the dealership and have them tell me I need more machine than I honestly do, and be none the wiser.

This is what I'm looking to do:

- Cutting and raking hay, possibly baling (small square and round) - 135acres
- Regularly stacking/retrieving round bales
- Digging post holes
- Snow removal (blower/loader)
- General landscaping / moving manure / etc.
- Any other odd jobs that come up

Based on conversations with other farmers, a tractor with at least 50hp was recommended.

I called the dealer and they quoted me $42,500CDN for a new M5040 with Cab, Loader, air conditioning, etc., plus taxes. I was expecting around $30-35,000 for this model, leaving me a bit confused. I will be buying all my implements at a later time, so I'm only pricing out the Tractor with Cab/Loader.

This leaves me with two questions: is the M5040/6040/etc., a capable machine for the work I will be doing, and secondly, was the price quoted for the 5040 normal? (Remember, it's Canadian dollars)

Thanks guys!

Sir: My understanding was that cabs are around 5 + K over the open station models, but don't hold me to it. I purchased my 7040 4wd w/Fels, HYD shuttle, fluid filled rears and leveler valve for 29.5 K (open station) the price difference between the 50-70 models is modest at around 1.5 K per increment. Personally, I would lean toward the 7040 model for your ag applications (has limited slip differ). whereas the lesser models don't) And definitely go with the hydraulic shuttle (around a 1 K option) you won't be sorry. I'm thinking the 7040 w/cab and above features should max at around 35-6 K. If you are using it for ag. applications, why do you have to pay taxes? bb

Well, I went into the dealer yesterday. They recommended that the 5040 would be a good fit for me, and that I didn't really need to go any higher.

For $45,000USD total (less one tax because of farm use) with $5,000 down, I get a 2007 M5040 with cab, hydraulic shuttle, air conditioning, cd player, and loader.

It's an extra $8,000 with the cab, so you could knock that price down to about $37,000 without a cab.

Does this seem like a good price? I haven't called any other dealers yet to get some comparisons and find a better price, but hearing about how everyone's paid $30,000 for a comparable model makes me question what's going on!

Sounds TOO HIGH to me! Down here where I live I think you can buy a 7040 with all that for about $36,500. I only gave $30,000 for mine but it had 100 hours on it, but it was still like new.

Oh, and I'd for sure get the 7040. The extra HP will open you up to a much wider choice of round balers if you decide to get into that.

That sounds high to me too. I just bought the 6040 with 4x4, FEL, hydr. shuttle, and open station for 28200. Add about 5000-6000 for cab and you still come up way under and thats a bigger tractor.

Definitely shop around for a better price. I got a new M8200 cab tractor with loader and all options 3 years ago and paid far less. Those M series tractors are great machines. Good luck.

Kubota Canada has a different price structure. Before the Canadian dollar rose to par with the US it, Kubota had even more ridiculous pricing. An L5030HSTC was twice the price in Canada as in the US.

You need at least the 7040 if you're going with Kubota but I would check out other local dealers. Other brands sell tractors in that size range (60 pto hp) that are priced much closer to US prices. The 5040 would work but you'd be very limited in the size of round baler and may be dissappointed in the power available if you have any hills. I would be looking at an 8540 even.

Depending on what province you're in, you may find gst/hst registration of your farm business a good move as many farm products are zero rated. That means you can claim your gst/hst back but you don't have to charge customers tax on the hay sales.

Thanks for the advice so far. I'm going to a Case dealership tonight to look at something comparable (JX70 maybe).

Slowsuzki, do you know if Case has their Canadian lineup priced more on par with their US offerings? Or if there's any particular brand which is favourable in pricing?

Kubota and Case are the two closest dealerships to me. There's not much in the Ottawa region, so I also suspect prices might be higher because of that.

Kubota is pretty flat on prices everywhere, they are assigned regions are and not supposed to compete with each other.

Northwest of Ottawa there is a lot of farming, you should find dozens of dealers if you look around a bit.

Case have some nice 5 year 0% financing going on in Canada right now. Neighbours just bought a Case 60 hp 4wd cab model with loader for a good price, I think 35,000 or so?
