That being the case, I wonder if since it is scalping rather than the actual cutting that is the concern, couldn't you try one on the dormant grass and see if indeed you do hit the high spots?

They do sell them (X4XXs), but not for those prices. You can do much better than that.

Bill, MA is Mass. We have about 8" of ice on our lawns. It was 6 degrees when I woke this morning.

I have the 60 inch MMM on my BX2200 and my property is hillside with many angulations. I am very pleased with the quality of cut (no scalping) and it is an advantage to have the extra width when trimming next to trees and shrubs. I feel sure that you would be happy with the cut.

If they won't let you test one at home, maybe there is a rental place close. If you could rent one for half a day, would be better than regretting your decision.
