Heard the other day that my new neighbors may have up to 5 kids. OK, not really into this idea, so up goes the privacy fence around the side of the house they are on. Going to lessen the temptation of kids near the pond, and I really dont care for this family. They basically stole their mothers house, put her in a retirement home, took away her car, job, freedom, and the home she had lived in for a few decades. She would spend days on end working on her flowers, vegetable garden (that I would till for her).........NO, wont be doing that for them, and just enjoying her place. With kids and the history of the kids in this family, we will be bombarded if we dont do something. Holly wants one up around the whole backyard area so the dogs could run some, but $$$ right now wont allow that expense without need. Will be starting layout and grading on Sunday for the drainage etc that will have to be put in.This is one of those, there goes the neighborhood things. This former neighbors kids are bottom feeders at best, living off her for the last few years. Not going to take a chance with my property.

Dig them posts 7 feet so they never topple...Good luck with the new neighbors... Keep us posted.

Thats exactly why I live at the end of 13 miles of dirt road. You got to have a teloscope to see any of my neighbors.

A friend of mine gave me some advice when I purchased my first house, he said always try and get along with the neighborhood kids or come Halloween your house may be on the TEEPEE and EGG list. It has worked fine so far. I let them take turns watching me weld with a spare helmet or watch me work on my snowmobiles, etc. when I'm in the garage. They usually only stick around 15-30 minutes then go play somewhere else. I also pump up there bicycle tires with my air compressor anytime.

Danny, I know you've had quite a bit of problems with these particular neighbors based on other posts you've made over the past year or two, but I admit that I like CATMANs advice of trying to make friends with the kids. Even if the parents are trash, a little candy can go a long way with the kids. If that doesn't work and you don't mind the drive up to my house, you can borrow my PHD and one of the augers, its a full size Speeco unit but it might work on your BX. I'd come help you with the holes, but with my recent surgery I'm down and out for quite a while. Heck I don't expect to be able to even use crutches for a 3 or 4 more weeks. I'd think you could drill all your holes in one day with a tractor mounted PHD.

This is as much for privacy as it is for limiting temptation to the pond. As funds allow the pond will be behind lock and key anyway. As for making up to the kids, well, not when EVERY action you make WILL be used against you! Remember this scum STOLE their mothers house thru getting her poa, and making a reverse mortgage on it..........now the neice is moving in with her yard rats.

My family and the lady got along fine, I would do her garden, plow her drive, help her however. When they moved her out, litterally, not a word was said, hi, bye, hey whatever. They KNOW I know, and EVERY time there is a chance they will sue, call the police etc. I just hope they loose the house when the reverse comes due!

I have no problems with anyone else in the neighborhood, would say most trust me etc. but this crew NO WAY do I trust them one inch.

Thanks Bob, but this is a good excuse to get a phd for the bota!

I am going to have some questions on squaring this thing, being it is 3 sided.

I am going to have some questions on squaring this thing, being it is 3 sided just remember your 3-4-5 triangle. Pick your corner spot, measure 3 feet from corner to a point on one side, 4 feet on the other, - move your lines until you have 5 feet connecting those 2 points (or any multiple of 3-4-5 ie: 9-12-15, the larger the measure the more accurate your corner with less care to get it "right on") and you automatically have a square corner.

When I put up a fence to keep the idiot dogs from wandering off, I also went off a corner of the house like your drawing. Make it easy on yourself, tape a laser pen on the side of the house and go out at dusk with some white paint and spray a line down where the laser falls. Do the same from the other wall, then just measure along the lines. Hard to get straighter than a laser. I acutally used one of those laser dealies that shoot a line instead of a dot, just set it on a 2x4 and held the 2x against the wall. Made a nice, straight line exactly parallel to the house wall.

having built a lot of cedar picket privacy fences.

set your holes at 7.5 feet.
This way if you are off a little, it doesn't matter
put them 18" to 2 feet down, bury in concrete
set a string line from one corner to one corner
mark the onces that are too high, cut them all at about 5.5 feet above ground. (17" circular saws work great for this, if not, go around it with 4 cuts in a regular 7.25" saw and whack it off with a hammer)

set the stringers (always use 3) to fully overlap
so each one goes from edge to edge and the next set is underneath or over it. (remember, we set them at 7.5 feet, so we have plenty of room to do this). I like to keep my stringers level, even if the pickets are sliding down a hill. looks good from the "bad" side that way and is strong!

use 16d nails, all the way in, set them at a angle (don't nail straight in), MUCH easier to do with an air nailer. (faster too), that way they won't come off in the wind.

The pickets.
nail the first one up., get it level, get it straight ,and get the height right
set a temporary one up about a 100' down (two nail) with the height.
set a nail in the top of each picket. Run a tight string line. This is now your top of the fence. As you bring each picket in, you just bump the string (but don't actually touch it) and then nail it into place. Every so often check that it's still level (perpendicular). Very fast. use a roofing nailer. (big head,), 6 nails per board. (2 per stringer)
one guy can set 250' before lunch.
Set your pickets to face into the wind. (so the wind blows them onto the stringer, not off)
