here is a photo of the very small cemetary/private burial groud we purchased with our woodlot and farmhouse. kathy, my wife, mothers' ashes are buried here along with an infant and the previous owners son. the head stone is his. we were in negotiations for purchase when kaths mother passed and the owners let us bury her ashes. different, maybe morbid, but so different and cool. we will be interned here along with the previous owners.

I don't find it creepy or morbid at all. I grew up next door to two cemeteries. The people across the street and down two houses had several graves in their back yard and the county potters field was about four hundred yards away. When I croak, I told my wife to cremate me and dump my ashes in the creek behind our property. That way, I'll eventually make it into the Mississippi, the gulf and the ocean where I'll be sucked up into the clouds and get a free ride around the world. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Not at all morbid. My mother-in-law and her mother are buried in our meadow, plus a 104 year old friend who had no living relatives and nowhere else to go. Also all our passed dogs and a very cool cat. When our time comes the rest of our dogs and my wife and I will join them.

Best part of all is because of the historical nature of the family plot, the state is required to maintain it when we're gone. So I can rest assured that my family's final resting place will always be manicured! /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

One nice thing about living next to a cemetary-- the neighbors are quiet.

It's when they start making noise though... I'd think about moving.../w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

I remember a private grave smack dab in the middle of our Boy Scout summer camp. "Here Lies Josephine" was inscribed on the cross headstone. Lots of ghost stories were told to first year campers about that grave . In truth Josephine was a mule that belonged to the man who deeded the land to the scouts.

I don't think the State of Iowa allows burials on your own property anymore.
