New Holland 1920
Hello everyone. This is my first post here. I found this site looking for help with my tractor.

I have a NH 1920. 33 hp 4 cyl. I have owned it since the end of May and it has run flawless. I parked it and it was running fine. I cleaned the bowel that the filter is in and filled the bowel with diesal fuel when iI put it back on to avoid an airlock. (don't know if that was necessary or not.) I did not start it after doing this.
I tried to start it a week later after it sat out in a thunder storm and it started right up for fifteen seconds then shut off and would not restart.
I took out the aircleaner and found some water in the cannister that holds the filter.
Today I put a two second shot of ether in it and it immediately, with a lot of banging started right up for a few seconds the shut back down. Did not have enough battery to do it again.

Can I get some help on what to do? Before I have someone come out and look at it?

Thanks
Alderman

You need to bleed the injector pump or each injector.

did you turn on the fuel? I never even fill the bowl with diesel. I just open up the fuel and the bowl will fill. I'd open the bleeder screw on the pump and let the air out if there is any. Other than that... you shouldn't put ether in a engine with glow plugs...

First thing you have to do is throw the can of either away before you damage something.:(

Next learn how to bleed the fuel system and then all will be fine.:D :D

Thanks for the replys. Is bleeding done with gravity alone or do I turn the engine over.

DiesalMonk: The fuel was on.

My goodness.. I hope you didn't destroy that wonderfull tractor. i had a 1920 for a few years.. it's a great tractor.. it happens to have glow plugs too.

In the hands of the untrained, ether might as well be a 105mm howitzer when it comes to a diesel engine. Improper use of ether leads to a couple things, 1, ether adicted engines. IE.. ones without enough compression to start on their own, 2, engines with broke rings from the EXPLOSION that ether causes, instead of the BURN that diesel results in, and 3, catastrophic engine damage when you spray ether into an engine with preheat.. like a 1920 has.

The smartest thing you can do is throw that ether away and hope you havn't ruined that jewel of an engine.

It's is, or should be fairly common knowledge that once you break intot he fuel system on a desiel that you need to bleed the air out.

Depending ont he setup, this can be accomplished a few different ways,.. in your case, i like to turn onthe fuel while the filter bowl is loose, till it drips ,.. then tighten down, crack the line at the injector pump to let any air out, and then crack the lines tot he injectors one at a time while cranking over till you see fuell bubble out with no air... keep yer hands away from the injector lines.. fuel injected under the skin has 2 outcomes:1,m you go to the hospital, and live, after therapy and surgery.. may or may not have hands and fingers after that... that's the 'lucky option'.. the 2nd option involves a pine box.. after they can't stop the gangreen.

Now.. next you need to get a copy of the manual to that tractor.. it has valuable info in it like this.

I'm puzzled why your battery only had enough juice for 1 crank over. a properly charged battery should wail over for a while.. sounds like this poor machine needs lots of attention... hope you havn't smoked her already... I'm guessing that little 4 cyl will be a bit pricey to rebuild.

good luck and post back.

The battery is dying from trying to start it on three different days.
I looked in the manual and found the warnings and they do not give good info on bleeding. Your description is much better on how to go about it.
Actually it is in excellent condition. it has 1,250 hrs. on it and I put a hundred hrs. on it this summer with proper maintenance. It sounds like I made a big mistake using the ether.:( I hope there is'nt any harm done.
Thanks
PS no more ether

You should have a bleeder screw on top of the injector pump. Open it up and crank engine over till it starts; then close bleeder screw.

Hey Alderman, great choice in tractors. It is nearly bullet proof and will serve you well for many years. Start a log and track your maintenance. Be sure to keep up on your maintenance. Buying a service manual from the dealer would be helpful. Service your fuel bowl often to keep water and dirt out of your fuel, otherwise your fuel pump could go bad. Also, learn to bleed your fuel system to avoid running your fuel pump dry. Good luck and welcome to the TractorByNet.
