I've always filled the filter housings with automatic transmission fluid on diesels when I change the filters. I've never had one suck air doing that. Never had to bleed any injector lines either. I've only had to do that after someone else had the system open. That ATF sure is some good stuff.

I'd recommend throwing away the ether too. It's bad news on a diesel. I've had to rebuild two big series 60 detroits, a cat engine and at least three case diesels that I can remember from that stuff. Those darn salesmen at the last tractor dealer I worked at even destroyed a brand new Kubota M9000 engine with it once. It's just bad stuff if you don't use it right. It's not good for it even if you do.

The owners manuals will almost never show you how to bleed the air from the fuel system. The shop manual will. I'd recommend buying one now before it get's too much older. They get more expensive as time goes by for factory manuals.

You should have a bleeder screw on top of the injector pump. Open it up and crank engine over till it starts; then close bleeder screw.
Do not crank the engine while the bleed screw is open. The tractor will not start, and the system will not bleed.
