Problem with my new cub...I\'m bummed

well, I broke in the motor on my new 2166 today, it ran fine for the 1st 2hrs, then once the 2nd hour was up and I started mowing at faster speed, about 10 min into it, the engine started sputtering like it was out of gas, so I went to put gas in, and the tank was still pretty much full.

shut it down for a min. or 2 and tried to start it again, no go.

a couple of times, it would act like it wanted to catch, but wouldn't fire...any ideas?

I'm totally bummed out, I was extremely pleased with the way it cut and ran, but the problem is it didn't stay that way

possibly the fuel filter? it has been sitting for a few years (it's an '02) but they said they ran it here and there moving it back and forth between 2 warehouses.

help!!!!!!!!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

If I recall correctly you bought it from a dealer, right? If so, get on the phone with them first thing in the morning and explain to them what happened. I'm sure that they'll take care of you.

Re: Problem with my new cub...I\'m bummed

fuel filter
varnish gumming up the carb
some sort of gunk in the fuel tank or fuel line

I'd guess it is minor, I'd also guess it is related to sitting around with minimal use and full or partially full fluid levels. Call the dealer, they should check it out under warrenty. And I wouldn't worry much about it being serious.

Ditto the dealer call.

However: if you're in a pinch and can't get it there soon even it they are cooperative:
It sounds like your absolutely right about the fuel problem, and the fiter is an easy candidate, but I'm thinking stuck needle valve.

Actually, I've never been in that exact engine (I'm just a doitmyself mascochist, not a mechanic) so I may be way off base, but that's the result on other engines I've seen behave similar. Also, when you imagine it's 5 minutes of operation every six monthes for the past 4 years, a little varnish built up is very likely (which, unless you like playing with carburators, is even more reason to get the dealer to give it a thorough inspection and/or cleaning).

On rare occasions I've had electrical problems somewhat mimic fuel problems, but these were all vintage tractors with finicky coils and/or condensors and your description sounds pretty blatant.

Good Luck! I think you'll be happy again very soon.

Re: Problem with my new cub...I\'m bummed

Could be the filter, BUT...

This past season we had a spell of mowers (mostly older units, and some ZTR's) doing the same thing...figured out that water had built up in the tank. The mowers would run fine for a little while but then have the same simptons you are experiencing. I would have the dealer come out, drain the water out of the system, put a new fuel filter on and it should start right up. Good luck!

Re: Problem with my new cub...I\'m bummed

Okay, I went out this morning and fired it up just to see if it was still doa, and it started, kinda weird. I had to choke it a bit since it was a little chilly, but once it got going and I let off the choke a bit, it seemed to run fine.

I didn't mention that before I bought it, I asked the sales guy to fire it up and it wouldn't. So when I picked it up I asked the service guy what the deal was. He said that there was some varnish in the carb and that he cleaned it, and it fired right up when he went to put it on the trailer. I would imagine they put some fresh fuel in the tank too, but you know what happens when you make assumptions...... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Anyway, I called the dealer this morning, and he said it's possible that either some gunk from the tank or in the carb or some unseen varnish got stuck in the jet/jets, which may have caused the problem. He said if I experience the same problem tonite, to bring it in and he'll take care of it. Thanks guys.

In a way I'm glad it fired up this morning, but it also makes this just that much more puzzling /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: Problem with my new cub...I\'m bummed

Mojoman, does it choke out, blow black smoke & smell like gasoline as the engine is dying, or does it lean right out & die (no gas smell)?? Like the others have said, could be junk in the carb. I've also seen a bad gas cap create a vacuum in the fuel system & cause the engine to starve for fuel & stall. Just an idea!
G/luck

Re: Problem with my new cub...I\'m bummed

Well, it's at the dealer, they said I'll have it back on Monday.

I went out on Thursday evening to run it, since it started up that morning, and it did the same thing, ran for about 15-20 min (until it got hot...this has some bearing on the issue) then just up and quit. So I ran out to gas up the truck since I planned on taking it back to the shop, and when I got back, I figured I'd try and fire it up again.....started right up.

Okay I thought, I'll mow with it again and see how long it goes, just to try to prove a theory I had with the heat.....15 min, again, just up and quits.

I crawled around looking for something obvious, and I noticed that the 2 wires running from the pto clutch looked pretty fried (I thought that's odd on a new machine) so I wonder if those wires are the culprit.

Oh well, I guess I don't care as long as it's good to go tomorrow. Thanks guys!
