It doesn't look good...

Split the 180 today to see just what is going on. Found the gear on the Aux. pump split in 3 pieces, 3-4 teeth missing on the idler gear, and the pump locked up tighter than a bulls fanny in fly time... At least the main drive gear wasn't damaged.

Apparently that's what that "crack" in the tranny was this summer, when moving it, from one barn to the other. And here I thought maybe it was one of the balls in the brake actuators got hung up... I wish....

Looks like the bushing's on the plate assembly are shot too. When removing the line to split the tractor, I laid my left hand on the aux. pump, and it kinda' rocked... I knew this wasn't going to be good... I figured there may have to be a little play in it..., but not THAT much..., LOL...

So looks like a new pump , a couple of gears, and some bushings to start.. And a real good flush job on the rear housing...!!

Just can't help but shake my head, when I see the way some of the things were designed on this tractor... Especially the aux. pump setup...

Added a couple of pictures of my latest cluster I got myself into...., LOL...

Are you sure the pump is locked? The new ones I've put in you couldn't spin by hand. Well maybe if you were real strong. All ouor 165's I've worked on , the pump had play to it, it wasn't mounted solid. Tough to say without feeling what kind of play you have.

I took the pump unit to an old Massey dealer today. They are one of the dealers that got them where they are now, but wouldn't build a nice new large fancy building to suit them. Massey pulled the franchise. None the less, they are busier than ever, and have a wealth of information, and parts.

I don't need a big fancy showroom to pay for, when I'm buying something there... I need parts, and info... And the guys that run it, are just good ole' boys...

I did find out that the play in the drive assembly is normal. He tried to turn the pump too, and said it is definitely locked up..!! As you say, it is somewhat difficult, but he said you should be able to turn it.

Got a new Sparex pump ordered. He swears by them. Had him look at the main pump pistons. There is some slight scoring, and said it is pumping good. Should last me a long time. I asked the price for a main pump kit. For the price..., while it's out, going to do that too.

I asked him what he would charge to do the pump work. There will be some modifications needed to fit the original filter to the new pump. With me buying the parts there, he said $50.00. He's got the job... I'd rather pay him the $50.00, than chase some intricate part that popped out, and bounced under the bench, into "Perky's Woods", as our neighbor used to say.

So things are looking up, somewhat. Put out a parts search on TractorHouse for a new idler gear, and gear that goes directly on the pump. He had a NOS Massey idler gear, and when he looked up the price, he gently put it back on the shelf.. I guessed between $50 & $60.. When HIS eyes got big..., I asked him $100, and how much... He said, "How about $205.00..!!"

May have him recheck, or call a Massey dealer, and get their price. I checked Jacks Mower parts, and he has them both for around $50.00, for the pair.

Reckon' I'll pull the IPTO assembly, and take a look at it... Better make sure while it's apart...

More good news this morning..!! Called the M-F dealer, and gears are less then $50.00 for the pair..!! Got them ordered, and direct shipping to the fellow rebuilding the pump assembly.

Also just got call from a used parts dealer.. Wanted $80.00 for the pair. Told him I could get original new one's for less.. He said he could drop to $75.00. It pays to check with the dealer on new items.

The gear I got the price quote yesterday for $205.00.., is for a 1080. And that is the correct price..!! Glad I don't have one of those..!!

I ended up getting a used set of grears for the pump and idler. The dealer I supposedly ordered from, said the gears were on backorder until after the first of the year. He did inform me another dealer said he had a set of the gears on his shelf. He wondered if it would be alright to get them from him. Sure.!!

I had to run some errands, and stop for feed on the way home. Found a message on the voicemail, that that dealer didn't actually have them on the shelf afterall... Or, did the other 3 dealers in the state, that according to their computer, showed them having them in stock... Word of warning... Just because the 'puter says they have it, doesn't necessarily mean they do... If they say they have it, have them physically check..!!

I did call a salvage yard, but was within 20 minutes of closing. He promised he would call first thing the next morning. True to his word, like 7 minutes after 8:00, he called, and said he had them.

I paid by credit card, and had him set it up, to direct ship to the guy who is doing the work. He said he should get them Friday... Great..!!

I had some fence to repair, and a couple other small jobs, Friday morning. Came to the house about 10:30 for a cup of coffee, and to warm up a bit. There sat a box by the door... My gears.... Again...., So another trip to the repair guy, 20 miles away...

While I was at it, took my IPTO clutch pack along to have him check it out. According to the repair manual, if taken apart, the sealing rings should be replaced. Might as well let him do it.

Good ole' Charlie popped it apart right there on the counter. How many places do that anymore..?? LOL.. More bad news. All the clutch facings, and plates need replaced.. At least the brass brake/bronze plate is still in good shape.

He has the kit to replace the innards of the clutch pack.

I told him to give me a call, when he got it all back together, and how much I owed him.

Sure will be nice to get it back together, and at least be able to move it out of the shop, for other projects needed done.

Here is a pic of the internals of my Aux pump. Not pretty... Broken gears galore, and a gouged up pump housing...

But..!! Had the main pump rebuilt, and a new Aux. pump... Also had the IPTO clutch rebuilt while in there. Did manage to get them in this evening. Hopefully by weeks end, I'll have it back together...
