Proofmeter rotation

I'm still wondering what determines whether the rotation is CW or CCW on seemingly identical engines...

The tachometer drive. Generator driven tachs swing clockwise, oil pump driven tachs swing CCW. Early oilpump driven tachs require a voltage stabilizer (reducer) for the fuel and temp gauges. Later ones do not. Hence the dedicated proofmeter assy for 75-79 (or so Ford 3 cylinder tractors).

Thanks for the replies. This tractor continues to baffle me. It has an alternator, but no tach drive on the oil pump. (could have been removed). The old instrument cluster appears to have a CW tach, but I don't know if the needle is in the "home" position. But at any rate I'm getting that if I drive off the oil pump I need a CCW proofmeter.

What brand of alternator does it have? A Delco would be evidence of a conversion of some sort.

It is in fact a Delco.

The picture is getting a little clearer.

That the alternator is a replacement for a generator explains a lot.

*There is no tach cable or adapter.
*The wiring is gone for the oil pressure switch, coolant temp switch, and thermostart.
*There are wires attached to the starter and alternator that are obviously not a part of the wiring harness.
*The warning light for the torque converter doesn't work.

It's starting to look like a really amateurish alternator conversion that just blew off re-powering several sensor switches and the proofmeter.

Was there some kind of wiring kit to properly make the conversion?

I'm now wondering if they even changed the voltage regulator.
