Several people around town have been flying the flag off the back of there truck. It is often accompanied by one or several additional flags, which might be a different conversation.

Generally it is in tatters, frayed at the edges, and catches on the tailgate when stopped. It doesn't seem very respectful to me.

Does anyone have any resources to look at about proper flag display, the stuff i have found thus far doesn't explicitly forbid this type of display but never spells it out either. If i could find a pamphlet i could hand out that would be ideal.

If you can't find a printable brochure on the Internet...you might check with either or both the Boy Scouts of America or the VFW...both are often charged with the authority to dispose of damaged or worn flags and should have resources for proper flag handling and display...
Good Luck...

Sometimes you have to realize that you just can't educate ignorance.

A tattered or frayed US flag should NOT be flown for civilian display.

Skylarkguy,

Curious what you will do with the information? I'm not sure walking up to one of these yahoos and explaining proper flag etiquette will get you the result you seek. It very well could get you a black eye and broken nose, or at a minimum a heap of verbal abuse.

There was a time when wearing any apparel that had any resemblance to our flag was frowned upon. Especially womens bikini bottoms back in the '60's....50 years later, race winners are draping themselves with the flag.

I want the flag displayed from a stationary platform, not on the back of a sweaty Olympic champion, any vehicle, or even a womans pretty bottom.

bigtiller - Agreed. The paradox is that we can only advise & educate. To go beyond it would go against freedom of expression.

I would rather they displayed the flag, even if tattered, since at least they are showing some Patriotism in a time when Patriotism is a four letter word and looked down upon by many.

I get what Bigtiller is saying but I have to be a bit of a smarty pants.:laughing::laughing:

Bigtiller said,

So we should not display the flag from boats or ships? :D Last year, we spent two weeks in Scotland and Ireland on a US flagged boat. We flew the US flag as one should, but many do not, as well as the courtesy flag for Scotland and Ireland when in those countries. The owner of the boat has been all over Northern Europe flying the US flag which has resulted in many good conversations with the locals.

It was quite interesting to be in Scotland where we flew the Scottish flag and not the Red Ensign for the courtesy flag. I suspect this could get one in trouble depending on where one goes in the UK.:laughing::laughing: But in Scotland, you saw the Scottish flag all over the place. Twas one of those danged if you do, danged if you don't situations.:D:D:D

When one enters another countries water, the vessel is to fly a quarantine flag until one has legally checked in, after which one flies a small flag of the country, in specific locations on the boat depending on how the boat is outfitted. Some countries/people get really upset if the courtesy flag is not flown.

Later,
Dan

(Allow me to climb up on soapbox and rant :punch:):

So steeped in authoritarianism you need official resources to advise you on what is "proper" ?

Does it takes you 1/2 an hour to set the forks and knifes on your dinner table too?

Instead of getting some self proclaimed authority to tell you what is proper, go research the word "Freedom".

I'm sure no matter what authority you find, you can find another one who takes it to another level and says there's even more rules you should follow.

I'm sure I'll hear the argument that if you don't display the flag "properly" you are somehow offending some snowflake who insists you must conform to their beliefs.

(Off soapbox now)

Whew!
