For those with more experience greasing equipment than me I ask: Should I be pushing out the old grease till I see new grease on my backhoe and tractor zerks?

If this is the incorrect thing to do what is correct?
Any additional tips are appreciated.....

Thanks :)

The only thing i can add is... wear disposable latex gloves and old clothes.. No matter how hard I try not too, I end up with grease all over me.. Moly enriched grease is really bad for sticking to you..

I like to use clean rag wipe fitting before and after greasing...remove old grease.

Yep,

I'm doing what you all have mentioned; and I'm making a 'sequence list' from the backhoe forward so I can make sure I don't miss one of the many fittings on the equipment. So far so good.

When I am greasing the major loader pivot points, I try to take the load off the arms and pins, so that the grease has a better chance of getting evenly distributed. Never works like I would like it to. It almost always finds a single path of least resistance and starts to flow out.

So I am fairly sure that I have grease, but unsure if any older grease is getting displaced.

If its been a while since the last lube or if its seen water, then you want to flush the crud out until you see fresh grease. If the machine is being used and lubed frequently, you don't need to waste grease to flush out good grease. Rule of thumb: pump until the grease coming out looks like the grease going in. There are some occasions like axles and gearbox's where you can cause problems with too much grease.

kg7il, I did a test once using a cutoff to make a shallow grove around a pin to match the zerk position. The results seemed mixed based on how tight the pin fit and followed your theory of the path of least resistance. In the end its nothing to lose sleep over because every pin I have removed has had a even coating of grease on it.

Rather than cleaning up the grease that gets pushed out, I actually leave it to act as a protective barrier against dirt that might get in from that direction ... Does anyone think this is good, bad, or ?

I think it creates a mess, and makes it even harder to see when good grease is coming out.

The best secret I know about greasing is to use a 16d nail to force a rag or paper towel into the space around a zerk to clean out the old grease. If the little ball is stuck, the tip of the nail can be used to push hard on it to break it free. Some people use a twig for these jobs, but the nail is a lot stronger.

I scoop up big globs of grease with my finger (isn't that what those low areas between the tire lugs are for?) and only use a rag if its in a area that I might rub against.

I make a point of leaving a little dab of grease on the zerk tip to keep out dirt.

I do take time to wipe the zerks clean before greasing.
