proper placement of set screws

I broke a piece off the end of a drive axle on my zero turn mower. I made a replacement stub with a coupler to slip over existing axle. I need to know proper placement of the setscrews to get max holding power. Do you place them 90 degrees apart or 180 degrees apart? I think 90 degrees is best. Any advise is welcome.

90 deg is best. One over the key and the other on the shaft. If they keep working loose you can demple the shaft with a drill point the size of the hole and run it down. You can put in a long screw and run a nut down the part sticking out to jam the threads. If the hole is deep enough you can put two screws in the same hole on top of each other. I have also seen a ball bearing dropped down a hole over a demple in a shaft and a set screw on top of that. I like to use never seize on things I put back together because I might be the next one taking it apart. Maybe this is all more than you wanted to know.

If you're using the setscrews to hold the sleeve in place, you're probably better off to weld it instead. With the load of a drive axle I doubt the sleeve will stay in place. However, 90 degrees is the best holding power.
