GlueGuy,

I think your Doug Fir could be the winner in the TBN "Big Tree" thread about 8 months ago.
If I recall Thomas had a big Bull Pine and I had a big Cottonwood, but neither was close to and 8 ft Dia. Check it out.

Here are the measurments of my White Ash Tree made by the DNR.

Circumference: 15' 9"
Height: 113'
Crown: 103'

Which gives it a point total of 327.75. They use a point system for ranking trees.

1 point for each inch in circumference (at 4.5' from the ground)
1 point for each foot tall
1/4 point for each foot in the crown. (i.e. 100 feet = 25 points)

Dave,

How is the crown measured? Is it the diameter, circumference, or what?

It will be difficult for me to get the height & crown measurments of the old wolf, but I can sure get a reading on the circumference. Do you know how far up the trunk they go to do this? I will probably measure the old wolf at chest height...

GlueGuy,

Crown Spread: The spread is the average of two measurements taken at right angles of each other.

Circumference: Girth of the trunk at 4 1/2 feet above the ground. This was established to avoid any abnormal base swell of the trunk at the ground line. In multiple stem trees, only the largest single stem shall be measured.

Total Points=Circumference (inches) + Height (feet) + 25% of the average Crown Spread (feet).

Al,

Just went back through that thread. Liked it a lot, and it motivates me to go down and (try to) take measurements on the old wolf. It's a big tree, but is on the trail on the north side of the ridge. I can surely get the circumference measured, but I don't know how I will do the height and crown. I'll wing it a little on that part, but will come back with measurements and pix.

If you guys like large trees, check out this Poplar off old hwy 64 outside Franklin NC. I didn't have my tape with me but my waist size is 34. Go figure.

Rich,

I think the guy from the DNR said he thought 200 years old or so.
