I'm looking at an open station MF4707 with an FL3615 loader. Is a downward/forward exhaust a good option?

My initial thoughts are biased by my more recent years of experience on the Kubota L4600 with its exhaust down low by the nose of the tractor. I have been unable to find any pictures online that show this detail and the only 47xx series tractors around me are cab models with upright exhausts. The suggested cost savings of $49 is insignificant to me on a purchase like this as it is most important to get the "right" tractor, not the cheaper one! ;)

I'm thinking the low exhaust is good for sightlines whether or not the loader is mounted. I also can see some benefit by not getting snagged with low hanging limbs near fence lines though that won't help avoid getting SWATTED by the same limb! Is rain even a factor for one versus the other? What am I overlooking?

And, if anyone has a good picture or a link to one with the MF47xx with the low/horizontal exhaust, I'd really appreciate it!

TIA,
Sid

I'm not certain how applicable this may be but... 1) isn't there a low-profile version of the 4707/8/9 tractors? If so they usually have a horizontal exhaust out the rear similar to the old Fords and Fergusons from the 1950's. 2) My own MF2660 low profile has that horizontal rear outlet exhaust and I am very happy with it. So much better than the obstructions of a vertical exhaust getting bunged up by trees and brush, etc. I like it. I did put on an automotive type exhaust tip that curves down ward and directs the exhaust away from the 3pt hitch lift arm, etc. That gets too hot to touch without the bent exhaust tip. Mine is open station too. A cab would get beat to death with the work I do with mine.

3) Please excuse the dirty condition, the hydraulic hose that is hanging and since been secured, etc. but here are some photos. The last one with the yellow flail mower in back lets you see where that exhaust tip is relative to other things in the rear. As I recall the dealer had to bend the low profile exhaust a bit when he installed my loader frame.

JWR, no chrome tip? I'm disappointed.

Well, just to keep you happy, I accidentally knocked off the plain steel tip last summer and the new one --- is bright chrome !

Thanks JWR! The MF47xx tractors have a forward facing exhaust similar to my L4600 Kubota. Your comments really support my general thoughts and is helpful.

Unless you hav ea specific application such as cleaning chicken houses were there is minimal headroom there really is no advantage to going with the low profile exhaust. he vertical exhaust does not hinder your line of sight by much at all.

Thanks! I'm mainly concerned with clearance along the hood when I'm under or around trees.

It is mostly preference of course but minimal headroom in chicken houses is not my reason. There are advantages to low profile under the tractor exhausts. Every tractor I have ever driven with a vertical exhaust is a nuisance for being damaged by limbs with going under brush and trees cutting with a bush hog, ingesting debris when not in use like bird nests, etc. and being in the way in general. Line of sight does not matter to me either.

To mention to Sid Post: The MF "low profile" tractors are NOT what they are in some other brands. The low profile MFs (my 2660 for sure) have lower size rear tires, different fenders, differently shaped platforms, and the horiz exhaust with very minimal chassis differences and no drive train differences at all. The tires are every bit as large in width but 24" rims instead of 30" or 38" etc. MF tries to compete in the low profile market without really making any significant manufacturing differences. I am very happy with the LP because of a lower c.g. by 6" or more (for steep ground) and one less step of climb to get on and off the thing. Mostly tires.
