Anyone know how the PT 180's do with the 3 blade finish mower. How well compared to a regular Lawn/Garden Tractor??

3 blade gives good cut but I would recomend the single blade, it uses less hp and gives a good cut.

since the earth is not flat you are better off getting three blades unless your lawn is absolutely flat. until such time the articulated multiple decks of 21 inches each, which is presently used on JD golf course equipment, is available for zero turn mowers, the multiple blades under one deck is your best choice. more so if you ever hit something, the balancing of the single blade is very difficult. the three blade situation can be easier rectified if you unbalance one of the blades.

I agree the earth is not flat and the 3 blade mower will not scalp as bad as a larger deck when cutting the same height, however most people who know grass say we cut it too short anyway. I am told for a lawn we should never cut more 50% of grass height. We have a flex-deck adapted to the 1430 and it does a great job cutting close and fast, but it cost half as much as the 1430 tractor. The 42" single blade on the PT180 cutting 1/2 to 1" higher cuts fast and leaves a nice finish with a lot less required hp. No overheating on 3 acres. If I was going with the 3 blade mower I would run it on the 422 or 425.

I always heard it was 1/3 the height. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Correct, I understand 1/3 is best but 1/2 is max.

the 1/3 rule is based an agronomic growth research, which i don't want to bore you with but there are other factors to consider also. if you cut more than 1/3 or more often you need to water and feed the turf more, and you may just as well get into the golfcourse business. if during a wet year, summer, or spring you may have to cut your lawn on a 5 rather than 7 day rotation in order not to exceed the 1/3 rule.

for more to the point info. contact your regional ag. school or state dept. of ag. extension agent, (if he is not as old as i am) he will tell you depending on the variety/ies of grass/es what the proper cutting height and frequency of cut is. the one third rule is just one factor in this never ending saga.

Yeah, remember that story about me getting a free fertilizer job when the lawn company did my yard instead of the guy across the street? It's happened twice. Then we had ample rain and I had to cut about every 3-4 days to keep up with it. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
