Went out to do a small project before dark tonight and the PT would not start. Since its been cold at night I put the battery on the charger Checked the PTO & Brake sol switches for proper position. Topped off the charge & still no action. By now its dark & time to research the PT forum. I did a search and:
1) Found a reference to bad Ignition switches
2) Found a reference to bad engine sol switches.
3) found reference to bad fuses, loose connections and poor grounds.

I did not find any reference to safety switches, or level cutout switches. Did not see anything on the PT manual electrical diagram either.

I'll check all these tomorrow with some sunshine. If I missed something, drop a line & I'll put it on the list.

Thanks for any suggestions,
Rgds,
tim

Dear JT,

Did you hear the fuel solenoid click?
Did you hear the starter solenoid click?
Did you check the ground connection from the battery in addition to the battery terminals? (Obvious, but it happens)

If you only heard the fuel solenoid, you might try a direct connection to(hook up a wire to the (+) battery terminal and touch the) starter solenoid. to see if it cranks.

I've had to tighten a variety of small screws and connectors, but almost never had to re-tighten the same one. While it keeps coming up, it never hurts to check for blown fuses and loose wires.

Good luck,

Peter

PS I am always surprised by how much harder the starter has to crank when it is cold. I can't imagine how hard it has to crank when it is 10F outside.

With the dawning of the new day I got all the tools, removed the seat cover to access the engine. & set out with my trusty VOM, manual and notes from Ponytug.

Started at the battery & worked back, checking all items on the list. When I got to the starter the problem was obvious, broken wire! Installed a new crimp connection & I was back in business.

This was the wire from the switch to the soleniod. (small one)
Thanks for the suggestions, PT.

Here is a picture. It might look familiar as it came from a previous post by Ponytug.
The broken wire is marked 'S'

Congratulations! I had the same thing happen mid job. I stopped the PT to load the front bucket. (Mucking out stalls) And presto, no starting. The horses thought it was very entertaining. I have since added some more strain relief on the wire...

All the best,

Peter
