Rear Finish Mower PT Shaft Shield Removal

I have a Woods 6' Rear Finish Mower and the grease fitting on the universal joint next to the gear box has loosened. I can't get at it well enough to tighten it with the protective shield in place. I need someone to tell me how to remove the shield over this universal joint. I'm hoping it doesn't require detaching the universal joint from the gear box. I'm inclined to just cut it off if it's not easily slid out of place. I don't crawl around on the mower deck while it's engaged, so the shield is not really serving a purpose.

Why not just slip the PTO shaft off the transmission? That should give you enough clearance to get at the zerk through the open end

Let me be a bit more specific then. The tractor end is connected to the PTO output shaft. The mower end is connected to the transmission input shaft. Remove the PTO coupler from the transmission input shaft, permitting less restricted access to the grease zerk you want to tighten. Most common PTO coupler removal method is either push button release (like on the tractor end), or hex head nut and bolt. Shouldn't be as difficult as you think. Two wrenches and it's off.
