I am serious about buying a B8200HST, but need some advice before I do. The model year is probably pre-1985 because there is no ROPS installed on it.

I was watching a video about this over-running clutch assembly for older kubotas, and the implication is that if you don't have one, you could damage your power internals. My question is, where can you buy these and what is the cost?

The other question i have is about the rear PTO. Does anyone know the direction of movement on this? Looking at the rear PTO from the back of the tractor, if it is turning CW, is this what I should be looking for? I have heard about some grey market tractors needing a PTO reversing gear, and did not want to make the purchase without knowing the facts about this.

Thanks for any input.

CW is the standard direction, so you are OK on that front.

Overrunning clutches are used with transmission PTOs. See TractorData.com - Power Take-Off. You can buy the clutches at TSC or similar stores if needed.

Most any dealer will be able to get you an over running clutch, most rural retail stores also would have them available. The over running clutch allows for the implement to turn without turning the tractors PTO. This is critical with a transmission driven PTO as the PTO and the rear wheels are linked together. With out an over running clutch the implement could cause the rear wheels to keep turning as long as the implement is turning causing you to drive some ware you do not want to. This commonly happens with implements that have lots of rotating mass such as rotary cutters.

Thanks for the information. I just realized that this only applies to a mechanical transmission, right? If the tractor has an HST, can I assume that this scenario wouldn't apply?

Most HSTs don't need a external overrunning clutch. Some tractors with manual transmission have this built in or have dual clutches for the drive/PTO operation. So it depends on the tractor model.

I'm surprised it doesn't have one built in. You will know fast enough just fire it up and stand on the brakes fast. If you don't have one it will try to push you forward. I need a new one for mine too since it's getting old getting pushed around again the last year or so. Those cheap ones from TS or where ever made in India do seem to work well though. Mine lasted for over 15 years of mowing 2 acres of yard and 10 acres of field. I think the reason it died was not being greased well enough and being left outside all year in the weather. Just be that much more careful near it if it's the kind like mine that sticks out. Those 2 grease zerks that serve to retain the roll pin that holds it on are just all that more spinning death to snag your shirt. At least yours should be able to be turned off and on separately so it's not such a danger.
