I have a County Line, PTO driven post hole digger. There is so much wobble to when I engage it that the holes are dug at an angel instead of straight up and down and as a result, I have to finish digging out the dirt with a hand held post hole digger.

Can any one of you help me out with your experience? I was told that after the auger point is place on the ground the operator should move the tractor forward about a foot then start digging. Anything you can help me with I will appreciate.

Thanks,

Roy

I usually have to move after the hole is about 1/3 of the way down. I have my wife on the side directing me. I hardly ever have to manually clean the holes. Have 8 and 12 in augars. I replace teeth every so often. Have dug lots of holes. Digging with HST is way easier than when i had manual transmission. I have a speeco unit and there is not much wobble. Did you have the side stabilizer pins or brackets inplace so there no side to side move ent when post hole digger is not in ground.

I put my magnetic Torpedo level on the top metal shroud of the post hole digger (I have the sane one you do) and have my wife watch it as I position the tractor and get the digger square. Mine wiggles around a bit too. No big deal, I dig my holes idling the engine anyway. Of course with almost 100 horse pto, idle works just fine. Got to keep the cutter piece sharp too. Actually, the slower you turn the digger, the better control wise.

i dont dig much above idle either....also have hydraulic power down if needed.

I don't, but I fabbed up a weight box for mine that I can put die plate in if I need the extra force. usually I don't. The Countyline digger has a screw point on the business end.

We always dig a small starter hole with shovel. Spotter (wife) gets the auger started with pipe in hole at back of auger then moves to side to direct me forward as needed to keep auger at 90 degrees.

Make sure you have your stabilizers (links) on the 3point arms tightened up to prevent a lot of side to side movement. This will help prevent an angled hole side to side. I usually place the tip of the auger in the starting spot, then move the tractor forward about 2 inches. As the auger digs in (about a third to halfway), the auger is vertical. I just did about 30 holes today installing a split rail fence. I only had a problem with one hole starting to go angled... I lost my pin on the stabilizer link and it loosened up.
