I have a new to me Satoh Beaver with 15HP 0.7L diesel 2 cylinder, PTO is rated at 12.2HP. Ive been shopping for a decent PTO chipper, but cant really find anything like the BX42 that would run at that low of HP on a cat 0. My lot is 0.76ac and I have a lot of stuff that needs to be chipper often. I need the small tractor for manueverability, but with capability for a 3-4 chipper. Also want a blackhawk backhoe to match the blackhawk loader, but thats another story.

You may have to buy a unit with a gas engine on it, pto chippers seem to need at least 15HP. I’m no expert but I’ve done a decent amount of chipper research lately. Like you I am looking to pick one up soon.

Some of the bx42 clones say 15+ and others say 18+. I could probably modify something to get it to fit and then just feed smaller stuff into it slower. Im not sure if this would be dangerous for internal tractor parts if the chipper jams on a too big piece of wood or if the chipper would just keep slowing down til the tractor stalls out? I found this one on northern tool 10-30HP, cat 0-1, 3.5”, but I want something with a directable chip shooter. Also its pretty expensive, so Ill keep shopping craigslist.

The best bet for a Wallenstein PTO chipper is a BX32/BX36 (12hp is at the lower recommended end). Your tractor won't be able to use a 4" chipper effectively. You will be surprised at the 3" capacity.

Yeah Im at the bottom range of both of those, it also says 25-30HP is optimal. The 32 says it has a 45lb flywheel and the 36 is 92lb or something. What would be the difference for me? Should I go heavier to keep the rotating mass in my favor when I bog down or go lighter to help it spin back up faster? Both seem like theyre worth a shot, but I couldnt find hitch category on the wallenstein website. By the looks of the pictures they have them mounted on cat 0 hitch tractors, but I could be wrong. I checked my local CL and no one is selling them used, but Ill keep an eye out for that madel.

Thanks

I had a Kubota B7100HST, 16 engine HP/13 PTO HP. I ran a MacKissick 4.5" TPH 184 chipper/shredder (branded Merry Mac) off it. It worked fine for brush as big as I could get down it. A 4" hardwood log would be too much, but it's rare to get right up to a chipper's limit often. A flywheel that's too big will be difficult for your tractor to turn over at or near idle when you engage the PTO clutch. It's a bit of a drive but I should sell the Merry Mac as I'm not using it.

I've had a MacKissic TPH-122 (TPH = Tree Point Hitch) since about 2004. It's a Cat 0 unit. I use bushings to fit it on my JD 2025R and used it on the 1025R and the 4010 (like a 2019E, if such existed today). It has basically the same internals (but much better designed) as a Troy Bilt Tomahawk that I had with an 8 hp gasoline engine on it. It'll chip up to 3 to 3 1/2". Use it A LOT. The housing is rather banged up, but sound.

I highly recommend the MacKissic. It's very easy to work on compared to the Tomahawk. The Tomahawk's spacers between the hammers (which are identical to those on the Mac's) get all out of shape and bent and almost weld themselves to the shaft. I used to spend hours in driving the shaft through those bent spacers to do a simple task that's about a 15 minute job on the Mac. The one (out of 4) bearings that's non zerk fitted had to be replaced. That also was a very simple job. Getting the chipper blade off is easy once you get a proper socket-ended allen wrench to fit the allen screws on it. I recently replaced all the hammers and spacers and one shaft because I'd rotated all the hammers as much as I could (they have 4 sides and can be rotated to get clean, sharp sides 4 times).

Used to regularly stop the Tomahawk's 8 hp engine, but think I've really only bogged the Mac one time (to stop it) even on the 18.5 hp 4010. Your Satoh would have double the hp of the Tomahawk and a bunch more torque and near the hp and torque of the 4010.
