Hi:

I have a small sawmill and am considering one of the PTO chippers to dispose of softwood slabs and edgings. The tractor is a JD 4310.

The slabs are mostly 8" or less, but there will be some 10" or more, depending on the amount of taper and bow in the log. I'll rip the really wide slabs in half in the mill, but would like to keep that to a minimum. The slabs will be 1" to 3" thick. The edgings will be mostly 1" thick.

I expect the amount of slabs chipped would be a half ton per month.

I suspect that the Jinma and Mulch Dog chippers will handle greater width than the stated 6" or 8" diameter they will chip, but that isn't spelled out anywhere I can find.

Can anyone tell me what width slab or board they will handle? Anyone using these chippers for this purpose?

thanks,
Mike

The Wallenstein four inch has a 4x10 opening and the six inch has 6.5x12, or so their literature claims.

Mike,
I have a local customer that has a small sawmill.

I sold him a ESRKINE wood chipper for his Bobcat skidsteer. His is chipping his slabs.

I sell the orginial Jinma , 6 inch PTO Chipper.

Height is 6 inches.

Width is 9 3/8 inches.

I have the Jinma chipper, it eats up stuff like that. It does much better on thick straight pieces than it does on brush, which tends to jam the feeder. Slabs I would expect to run through at the full feed rate, which is roughly 1 ft/second. A half-ton sounds like a pretty small job.

I have the wallenstein bx62 and I believe it will take a 12 inch slab. I also have the JD 4310 and have found it to be sufficient for that chipper thus far, especially if you are chipping soft slabs I don't think you will have any problems. I stalled the tractor on some 5.5-6 inch cherry trees, but when I restarted had no problems. I think it is a great chipper for the money.

I'd advertise the slabs for $50 per pickup load. You'll get plenty of takers for woodstove and campfire users.
