PTO Chipper Help!

Hey folks I'm looking at getting a PTO Chipper to use with my Kubota L3010 tractor. There is a used one that I have found that was made in Finland. The ID plate says Sa Tervooy then on the second line Karjalan Rautarakenne. The chipper looks to be in reasonable condition, but I can't find anything on the internet. The owner says it handles 6" diameter limbs with no problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Never heard of them, but that doesn't mean much. You should check on parts availability.

The Finns have a large forest-products industry and no doubt have made some excellent agricultural/industrial wood chippers. They may also have made some poorly-designed, inexpensive pieces of junk. You (or at least I) would want a lot more information. How did the current owner come to have it? Does he have Owner's or workshop manual and parts diagrams? What did he do for parts? How he answers your questions may influence how well you trust him.

You are buying a foreign-made, used piece of machinery and may have to remanufacture it. How complicated is it? How heavy is the flywheel? (6" may be borderline with 24 PTO hp). What sizes are the knives and bearings? And belts if it uses them. Can you get replacements? Are you mechanically competent to repair and service it? If not, how will you do so? The deal of the century may or may not be a bargain.

My impression is that they are no longer in business, but I am not 100% sure about that.


I have a test report of several Finnish PTO chippers and among them is model Hakki 200 made by S.A. Tervo and it looks like well made chipper and compares very well.

Thanks guys, I appreciate your getting back with me so quick. Yep, sounds like a good machine at a decent price, but service and parts become the real questions. I'm going to take a look at it, we'll see!
