Hi guys. I have a Cub 1863 with an 18 HP Kohler. I am going to change the PTO clutch this spring. Is it a hard job? Or is it as easy as it looks? Anything I need to know? Tricks?

I appreciate anything you can give.

It's not real hard to change out, but once the new on is on you have to set the air gap to the right measurement and make sure it is even all around. This is done using the three spring loaded nuts with a feeler gauge between the rotor and the armature. As these clutches are very expensive, I recommend getting a hold of a service manual to see what the correct air gap is and see exactly how to do this as it differs between the models.

MAny of the newer set-ups come preset and it would be a good Idea to double check when purchasing your new clutch.

I have the 1864 manual. If it's the same as the 1863, I can look it up/post.

In fact, I recall this manual IS for the 1863 (there is no 1864 specific manual).

Thanks for all the advice guys. I don't have a service manual for my tractor. So, if you could post that gap spec. from the 1864 manual that would be great!

Early 1863's serial numbers 836,001-880,000 use the old style adjustable PTO clutch. If this is your case you can use the procedure for the 1862 in the online manual here IHRegistry Home to set the air gap to .017".

If you have a later 1863 serial numbers 880,001-899,000 your tractor will use the newer style PTO clutch assembly that bolts on without requiring adjustment.

Hint :) The older adjustable ones if adjusted right are the better PTO clutches IMHO.

Wow great info! I appreciate it. I have the older style one. So, that's good to know they're a little better. This is the first time it's been replaced since the tractor was new.

Ok, I see it's already covered :)

BTW.. You can buy an entire set of manuals for about $50 from C&G.
