hey guys ... dumb question for y'all.
What are the chains attached to each end of the pto shaft for attachments for?
I first thought they were to keep the cover from spinning when the PTO is engaged ... but the first time I attached the chain to a solid attachment point ... bye-bye chain.
Next I thought that maybe thay would attach to each oteh ... but of the 3 shafts I have (tiller, bushhoh and auger) .. only one has (uhh .. had) chains long enough.
Not one of the 3 manuals says anything about the purpose or attachment points for the chains.
Just there to beat the paint off??

too bad that common sense ain't

Wingnut, not a dumb question at all. And the only such chains I know of are to keep the "cover" or "shield" from turning. If your shield is turning also, and broke the chain, it's installed incorrectly.

ditto what bird said. If you're covers are generating that much friction have you greased the cover itself?? All mine actually have a plastic zirk fitting right on the cover as the shaft is supposed to spin inside the cover without the cover turning.

Wingnut,

On my Woods RD6000, rear finish mower, I hook the front chain to the drawbar and the rear chain to one of the support arms on the deck. Cover should stay still while shaft spins inside. Manual shows this too on the Woods of course./w3tcompact/icons/cool.gif

Gerard, good point ... never thought of greasing that (although I manage to get grease on everything else in sight) ... I'll take a look at that tomorrow.
Thanks also, Bird and JimBinMI (what part of MI ... I'm near Bay City)

Wingnut,

Just outside, east of, Battle Creek, a.k.a. - Cereal City, Kelloggville, Post (General Foods) and Ralston are in town too. Sometimes smell Fruity Pebbles on the way to work in the morning! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
