pto cutting out

Hi All
I have a JD 1023e When i am mowing thick grass above 2300 rpms the mid pto shaft that runs the belly mower cuts out. You push the yellow pto button in and pull out to the on position and it works again. The tractor did it about 20 times yesterday. The temp gauge reads about the 1/2 way mark, fins on rad and screen are all clean.
Normal light grass temp gauge reads about 1/3. I am thinking there is a sensor somewhere that is telling the pto to shut down due to engine heat??? Also possible the switch is jiggling off due to rough ride?? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Is your mower deck belt driven?

pto shaft runs to gear box then belt totally an electrical cut out of some kind

Did you back-up about 20 times yesterday? This may be just a safety trip operating as it was designed to do. You have to push or pull something on the dash before you try to back-up.

Mowed all day at 2800rpms in about 4in grass no problems at all. Temp gauge stayed about 1/3 I think this is heat related. When the temp gauge hits 1/2 problems start. I may be trying to mow grass that is too high.It is an Old fescue hay (about 9-12in) field i mow every 20 days...it is now a subdivision with empty lots. Thinking about a small auxillary electric cooling fan???

Pto still cutting out temp gauge was normal yesterday, but it was in the 90s What else should i be looking at?

I think you have an intermittent short some where, possibly the pto switch or the wiring too & fro. Part time problems are a pain to diagnose, good luck.
