I have a n2000 with a old bush hog that seems to be functional. The PTO drive shaft was broken so I am trying to locate a replacement. Mine has a spline on the tractor side and the hushhog side so I need a expandable shaft for that purpose. With the desk down I measured 43" from the spindle grove to the deck spindle grove. I guess I need to be able to compress it to 36" to install and remove same. Can any on tell me of possible source?
TIA

PTO shafts come in many lengths and coupler combinations. Any farm supply store worth it's salt will have what you need. Length is the easy part. It's best if you can take the old shaft with you, as not to get the wrong ends.

What greg said. You cut them to size. There are square, round tube with a weld-on square, and triangular (but highly rounded) styles most common, and come in different sizes per the load you are putting on them.

Any good farm supply store, or for more money any tractor dealer, should have a good selection to pick from. Take your old one in, and should be able to match it right up.

All pto shafts need to be expandable, when you lift or lower the implement it needs to expand/contract. Don't leave it too long, usually as you lift the implement the pto shaft compresses until the implement & tractor shafts are horizontal, you can wreck things badly if you left the shaft too long. You need to take the same off oboth shafts, not just cut one side.

If only one part of your shaft is damaged, you only need to replace the damaged side. In fact, what is damaged, all the idividual parts, from a coupler spring to a cross bearing are all replaceable?

PTO Shaft rule of thumb...

To get a correct measurement do the following:
1. Install attachment to tractor.
2. Raise machine so that gear box input shaft is level with
the pto shaft on tractor. Same height from ground.
3. measure groove to groove . This will be shortest
distance, and prevent a shaft from being to long
and causing damage to either tractor or machine.
4. Use this measurement as the length of the shaft.
Normally you will want to cut the shaft 2 - 3 inches
shorter to allow for some free movement to ease the
install.

hopefully this will help...
