Hello -

I'm in the market for a compact tractor to brushhog 10-15 acres 2 to 3 times a year. I'll be using a loader on it as well for small around-the-house/farm chores. I'm looking at some of the 25-30hp 4wd units (probably with HST). My question is dealing with the PTO. This is all pretty new to me and I'm not _real_ familiar with all of the PTO terms. I'm seeing some of them with live, trani-driven w/ overrunning clutch, live-continuous w/ overrunning clutch, hydraulic live-independent, etc. I think I know what some of these terms mean, but, maybe need an overview from somebody. Mainly, however, I need to know opinions on what pto setup would be best for what I'm mainly going to be doing with with the PTO (occasional brush hogging).

Thanks a bunch,
Ken

They all work, but given a choice I'd sure get a tractor with an independent PTO. Most work from a switch and 'independently' from the foot clutch. For Bush hogging you'll like it the best as you'll be able to smoothly back up or change gears without having the cutters stop or reverse direction, or have the tractor jump around when the spinning attachement feeds power back to the transmission.

You can do all that with a live pto/ stage clutch just fine. My ex-NH1920 was live pto/2 stage clutch. Once you had the pto running.. you flipped down a lever so that when you clutched.. it only clutched the drivetrain.. made easy stops/starts/reverse.. etc.. kept the hog running the whole time, .. untill you flipped the stop up and clutched fully.

Still.. independent pto would be the 'upgrade' to that.. etc.

Excellent info - thanks for all the good feedback. This does really helps me fill in the blanks. I think Mike was right... an independent PTO could really make things almost like a riding mower.
