On my L175 (I'm denying it being an L1500 - which it is) the PTO gearshift has the speeds @ rated engine RPM's as:
1st - 597 rpm
2nd - 1185 rpm
The questions come about (because my L175 is REALLY an L1500) tractor has 4 PTO gears. Anyone have any specs on the rpm ratings of 3rd and 4th gears? To what purpose of the higher rpms (assumption here) of the higher gears? What would you use the higher rpm rated gears for?

Here I go with my brochures again. For what it's worth...

I have a sales brochure for an L-185. It advertises a 3-speed PTO with speeds of 540/702/1007 rpm at an engine speed of 2430 rpm.

I have a shop manual for my B7100 that covers a lot of tractors including the L-175 and L-185. It indicates that the L-175 has a 2-speed PTO and the L-185 has a 3-speed PTO (in agreement with the brochure) but no speeds are given.

An interesting note: The shop manual does indicate that the L-175 does not have an over-running clutch! The L-185 does.

This made me look closer at the B7100 specifications; the B7100HSD has an overrunning clutch while the B5100D/E, B6100D/E, and the B7100D does not. I had always gotten conflicting answers when asking dealers whether the B7100 had an overruning clutch or not...now I know why.

As for what the higher speeds are used for, I would say "nothing" in the United States nowdays. I have a brochure on an old Kubota brand 3-point finish mower that required a PTO speed well over the standard 540 rpm, but I can't remember what it is right now. I would guess that other countries may have various other equipment that operates at varying speeds.

Kelvin, thanks for the response! I had found in my L175 manuals that the L175 doesn't have the over-running clutch. In every respect checked so far (exception being PTO gears) the L1500 and L175 are the same. The exception is the L1500 has a 4 speed PTO.
Interesting that your brochure shows a higher speed requirement for a Kubota 3pt finish mower at that point in history. I figured that the 2nd gear rpm speed was different on the L1500 than the L175, but it would be interesting to find out what the gear rpm ratings are for future reference. I can think of a few possibilities for higher rpms such as a hydraulic pump, generator, etc.
