Tractor
T065 and a 165
I have a MF 65, serial number says it was manufactured in 60 or 61. The hydraulics work on the three point hitch....but the PTO will not engage. When you push in the two stage clutch, you can feel each stage in the clutch pedal. Then when you shift the PTO from neutral you can not feel any gears engage. Even when I let the clutch out a bit....there is still no grinding of gears.

Any ideas, and guesstimates on the cost of repair. Will I have to split the tractor to get to the problem?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I'm fairly certain the 65 is simular to the MF 50. In the 50, there is an internal shear coupler that protects the tractor from severe overloads through the PTO. Possibly, it can be reached by removing the lift cover. It should be in close proximity to the hydraulic pump, but seperate from the pump. I'd suggest getting a service manual and/or a parts manual. (look on ebay) At the very least, removing the lift cover should let you get a look at the internals of the pto in/out shifter

Thanks Farmwithjunk. I have a manual I purchased about two weeks ago. I will go back and look more carefully. I believe you are correct that the 50 and 60 are similar.

Warren:

On a 35 you can inspect, though not repair, the coupler by removing the inspection cover on either side.

Good luck.

I just purchased a 165 today. It has some problems, but one thing I noticed is that when shifting the PTO lever in and out, without the engine running, I could actually feel the gears meshing as I engaged the lever. I don't feel that at all on the 65. It has been to darn cold to do any major work on them lately, so will wait for it to warm up and then get my hands dirty.

I just keep thinking that perhaps there are some shifting forks that may have come lose or the shift lever has come lose behind the inspection plate.

I am quite excited about my recent purchase. A 165 that is in real straight condition. It has not run in about a year and a half. Fenders have not had any equipment rolled up on them, no rust, and no 1/2 inch of oil sludge on the outside of engine, as some I have seen have. Good rubber all the way around, and the drawbar is still there, and no ugly oil running or having run out of the bell housing weep hole. I am hoping that the multipower is intact and working.....paid $500.00. If worse comes to worse I can part it out and make more than that.,

Gas or diesel 165? Get it running and haul it down here and you'll fetch $5000 in a minute....Masseys sell really good here.

Perkins Diesel......silly me I had to think hard about buying it for about a month. Then I started reading what you had to say about Perkins Diesels and what others on this board say about these Massey's and decided to jump.

Since then one friend of mine told me he would double my money sight unseen, and another friend told me he would trade me his running 65 and give me 500 to boot.....but they are not that good of friends....:D

I know of a couple re-man engine vendors that'll pay more'n $500 for a good block/head/crank/rods/injector pump core for a 165 Massey Perkins engine. I'd toss in $100 each for a pair of good fenders.

After thinking more about your 65, I'd start by pulling the round "inspection plate" on the left side. (The one with the pto shifter) and check for fork damage, ect. Remember to drop about 3 or 4 gallons of hydraulic oil out first or you'll get quite a surprise! If it's that shear coupler, you'll be able to see it with that inspection cover off anyway.
