Last week I visited the National Farm Machinery Expo. in Louisville, KY and talked to a couple of winch vendors. I was able to speak with one of the owners of Fransgard at length and we specifically talked about PTO & tractor hp power ratings. He told me that it actually only took about a 15 hp PTO rating to operate the winches of various sizes. He indicated that:
- Getting the PTO drive line geometry alignment was important (as straight as possible between implement & winch drives) for proper performance.
- Overall tractor hp is more related to 3-point hitch lift capacity (larger winches are heavier) and also relates to the ultimate load capacity for skidding.
- Higher hp tractors are also heavier providing a more secure base to pull against and the power necessary for skidding more logs per trip.
I wound up buying a Fransgard V-3507 on the show floor at a good price with some of the "options" included, but I had to go back after the show was over to pick it up so I've not yet had a chance to give it a good workout.
