Hey guys! Im new to the forums, not so new to tractors in general. I am also new at potentially fixing tractors. I have a dilemma that I need to consult you guys on. There is a very nice looking MF Super 90 for sale on eBay around here.

MASSEY FERGUSON SUPER 90 DIESEL FARM TRACTOR - eBay (item 220680304492 end time Oct-15-10 06:44:36 PDT)

As you can see its in real good shape and the hours are good, the tires are good. Everythings good, EXCEPT the PTO. Can you guys explain more to me about what the guy means when he says it wont work at engine speed but will work at ground speed? And is this something that you guys think I could fix myself? Thanks for the help in advance and Im looking forward to hearing back from you.

Hi Dorian thats a nice looking tractor from what I see in the picture of it.The PTO thing is going to be a problem for you unless your really mechanically inclined.Ground speed on a pto is a different gear from tractor driven PTO. The speeds of the pto shaft are very different. What I'am trying to say is tractor pto driven is 540 rpm where ground speed is the same as your tractors rear axle. There engaged different in the trans. they use the same shaft but are shifted into different speeds by different gear's.What gear is gone is hard to say.So in another words if you do buy it and want to get the PTO 540 working be prepared to do some work. The trans will have to be opened up and possibly split as well.Hope this helps.

Think of the old push drum lawn mowers and you are the engine . While ever the wheels are turning , the drum is turning and cutting grass . When you stop pushing the mower , the cutters stop . This analogy is similar to how the ground speed PTO works , ie when the tractor stops , the PTO stops .

If it is not a linkage problem , it could be costly to fix and no good as it is for normal around the property use .

Could just be the clutch disc as well I think. When in ground speed the PTO, it drives with the wheel speed. When 540 is asked for the 2nd stage of the clutch is used to power the shaft. To me I would think it to be an adjustment of the clutch fingers/linkage or the disc itself to be bad. Repair difficulty depends on your mechanical ability though.

To be honest, I would buy that thing in a heart beat.

Though I really want a 95 with the Detroit, that is a nice vintage tractor that still has plenty of life left in it. The PTO wouldn't scare me at all.

I agree with you about buying it.It sure does look nice in the picture. And as for the fixing no problem at all.Larry

Hey guys, sorry that I didn't reply earlier. I called the local IH dealer/repair shop and the tech told me that it is likely the Clutch Pack. Then I went to AGCOs online partsbook. From the blowout picture it doesn't look to be to bad of a repair. I can handle my own when it comes to pretty tough repairs if I just go slow and methodical. The IH dealer said a new clutch pack would be $400.

Either way the guy that had the listing of eBay took the listing down early. I didn't get a chance to bid on it and I contacted him to see if it was actually still available. So we will see if he comes back to me. Im hoping he does, because everything looks to be in real good shape.
