Tractor
jinma 285
Hello,
I have a Jinma 284. Fun little tractor for a retired hobby rancher. Unfortunately, I know just enough about tractor use and repair to be dangerous, but as said "Old enough to know better and young enough to do it anyway.
My Problem:
I got into the habit of engaging the PTO without using the clutch. Now PTO is  not working. I can turn the shaft with my hand but will not engage.
My plan:
Against mine and other's judgement, is to repair it myself.
My Hope:
Help me get it done.:licking:
Thanks in advance?

I'm with you -- my knowledge level is definitely dangerous! I'm learning fast though, so I'm sure you'll be fine with repairing the PTO yourself.

I got into the almost the same habit as you, but I would engage the PTO before starting the tractor. My clutch wasn't adjusted when it came from the factory, and I just didn't have time to deal with it. My PTO eventually broke as well, but I took it to a dealer to have it fixed. $950 later, and I made a decision to fix it myself the next time it broke...

So I haven't done the repair you're planning myself (yet) but I think you should be able to pop the cover off the back end and see what's wrong pretty easily. According to the dealer, my PTO shaft had a few teeth sheared off of it. Good luck!

Don't know much about Jimma's but engagement of the PTO without clutching on a gear driven system is a BIG no no. You probably broke some teeth off. You will probably have to split the tractor

Thanks for support. It would be great if I can access the problem through the back end.

What do you mean by "split the tractor"

A tractor doesn't have a frame like an automobile. The front axle is bolted to the engine, the engine is bolted to the transmission, the transmission is bolted to the rear axle/differential. If you need to take out the transmission, the engine, or the differential, you unbolt them from each other and the tractor literally splits into two pieces, the front wheels going with the engine and the rear wheels going with the differential. It's not that hard, but you need to think ahead about how you're going to handle pieces of metal that weigh thousands of pounds.

I don't believe you have to split the tractor to fix the PTO, I think there is an access plate that allows you access with the transmission in place.

Click on the text in the post above that says "Jinma Dealer, Wood Chipper , Compact Jinma Tractors." That will take you to a page that has pictures of all of the major components of the Jinma in various stages of disassembly.

When the dealer replaced the PTO shaft on my Jinma, they didn't have to split the tractor. Hopefully, you can just replace that shaft and be done with it. I believe it's under the hydraulic tank, so you might have to drain the hyd fluid first.
